I recently bought two new pipes, my first meerschaums.
One was a new, block-cut pipe on eBay from Turkey. Inexpensive smooth bent apple.
The other was a unique unsmoked estate pipe from I believe the 1970s. EBay too. Briar but wrapped in black pigskin with a meerschaum lining. I assume it's not block meerschaum. Dr. Hardy is the brand.
Both have a somewhat sweet, unidentifiable but not unpleasant odor to the meerschaum. At first I thought it was the beeswax on the outside of the Turkish pipe. But I can't imagine the meerschaum lined pipe would have beeswax on it too. And its odor became stronger after its initial smoke.
Any ideas? It's a strange sweet chalky scent I can't identify but is exactly the same for both pipes.
