  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Brothers,
I just ordered several of the oust fans to use for air circulation in my cabinet humidor. I understand that there is a mod that can be done to them. Does anyone have a link for that mod or the time to tell me how to do it. Many thanks in advance.

i did this to a few oust fans for some other brothers it is pretty easy actually:

Step One:
Find an old cigar box that is large enough to hold the fan and small container (4-6 oz)

Step Two
Take apart the oust fan

Step Three
Drill one Two inch hole in each end of the box

Step Four:
Put plastic mesh over the holes
(use stuff with big holes so it doesnt prohibit the air flow)

Step Five:
Mount the fan and battery pack inside the box so it is pushing air out and sucking in air from inside the box

Step Six:
Tape the container using that double side foam tape that 3m makes (super cool shit) right behind the fan so it pulls the humidified air off the container

Step Seven:
Put beads in the container

Step Eight:
Turn the fan on and put it inside your humi

If you are using this for a vino i suggest making two of these for optimal air flow

I am trying to find pics right now to help my horrible instructions!

Thanks Matthew. Makes perfect sense. I am not sure that i am going to need it to produce additional humidity so much as just circulate the air. I have never seen an oust fan in person so don't know what i am dealing with. If it is battery powered i guess i could just position them throughout the humidor to increase air flow. I have a 3000 cigar cabinet humidor with a Oasis II XL humidification system in it. I am noticing that the top of the humi is not getting the circulation that i had hoped for. Any suggestions on placement of the fans, or any other mods that i would need to do in order to make this work. Thanks so much for the help, PM me your addy and i will send a thank you gift.

No need for a gift, this is what brothers here do!

I would put a few fans down near the Oasis. I think this is because heavily humidified air has a high percentage of h20 in it.............. so it is more dense.............. so it sits at the bottom of the humidor!

To fix that mix the bitch up with a few fans

Here is a pic of what i am talking about in the previous post:

minus the beads ofcourse

Dave, I too have a Oasis II XL and I purchased the auxilary fans that can be connected to the remote and run wirelessly. I then mounted them to the top back corners of my humi. Did not know if you knew about that option since the instructions that come with the unit does not go into great detail. It is basically PC fans that run continuosly. If you know about electronics (I don't) you could proabably make your own if you had the right connection to hook into the remote. There is nothing fancy about the fan extention just wire to fans.

I thought about that option, the problem is that the location i have the remote unit attached does not allow me many places that i can put the fans. Also, if i read correctly, the max number of fans is 2. I want some serious circulation in this thing, and i am not sure 2 fans will do it. I also looked into purchasing some actual PC fans which can be modified to do the same thing, however, each one requires an adapter with a power source, in other words more cords running everywhere. I have come to the conclusion that the easiest, cheapest, most flexible option is the oust fan. Regardless, i appreciate the advice.

Another question, how do you have your oasis positioned and how much space did you leave around it. I have mine blowing toward the front door of my cabinet humidor and have boxes pretty much surrounding it. Do you think this poses a problem?

Thanks again gents.

Oh, forgot to mention that your oust mod is a great idea Matt. I may end up rejuvenating an old coolerdor i have and using a unit like that to humidify. Thanks for your help again.

I have the antique tower version of your humidor in your pictures. Apparently, mine is not quite as deep as yours because I cannot position mine vertical from door to back like you have in your picture. Mine is positioned from side to side and pushed almost all the way back. I put the fan deflector all the way out and touching the side wall and mounted the fans at the top. blowing bck down. I only notice a slight humidity difference (1%) with this corrent configuration. That brings me to another question, are you using the same hygrometer to determine your humidity in the different sections. I had two digital hygrometers from the same company and one was totaly difierent than the other. So I placed both in a calibration bag for 24 hours and one that was low was wrong. Those damn things are irritating. I too have boxes and bundles around the oasis and have noticed no problems, as long as air is able to flow upwards.

Thanks for the input once again. I always calibrate my hygrometers to make sure that they are accurate, so i don't think that is the problem. I just think there is not enough air flow without the extra fans and given the lack of free space in the humidor. I am sure i will figure it out. The fans should be here in a day or two and i will experiment until i find the best configuration.

Peace

Dave

Nice Mod, M! I like that.

Oh, and I think they run 5 on 15 off or something like that.

Always looking for better fan options. I have a few oust in my cooler, but they just don't push enough air.

I agree, I just put a couple in my Vino and I was surprised at how little air they pushed. Great Mods though Matt, I may do that just to get rid of my tray that I keep beads in.

If only I knew how to get hold of Tim "The Toolman" Taylor from that TV show. I'll bet he could fix us up.

well the optimal design would be to replace the oust fans and use computer fans. But that requires a hard line into the humis which we all know is a pain in the ass.

These work well enough were i dont think it is worth all the extra tinkering BUT if someone has a larger application then the vino then upgrading the fans may be a viable option.
