I haven't charred anything important. was just curious. been sticking to cobs so far. Just read about people charring their bowls.

BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Charred it a bit on the back side of the bowl a few mm above the draw hole. No real serious harm though, and my cake.buildup has filled it in at this point. I tend to just acquire things like this and never plan on selling my pipes. I will keep.them collecting dust before selling them because I am always impressed by the craftsmanship it takes to make them.
I still consider myself a pipe noob and have a total of 5 briars, 4 of them are cheaper and bought new and one estate pipe that needs to be reamed, salt-treated, etc. before it makes it into my regular rotation. Still working on properly breaking in the new briars and have had some difficulty getting them to burn completely to the bottom. The draw hole placements do not seem ideal from what I have read and I am assuming that is the culprit. Other than re-lighting, smoking till it goes out, letting cool a bit, and repeating are there any other suggestions for these pipes?

just smoke the shit out of them? probably 1/3 of my pipes are not drilled "ideal", and could be considered either too high, or off to the side, on the draft hole. it matters more how you smoke, IMO. which is a factor of experience, which comes with time. i have been smoking briar successfully for a year and a half, but have been (poorly) trying for 19 years
also, don't sweat it. no one is keeping score. if you smoke enough to enjoy, and feel satisfied with the experience, and still have 1/4 a bowl left, who cares?

Thanks! I was worried not building a cake at the bottom might be a problem but I won't stress.
With straight pipes you don't seem to have that as often, it is generally found more with bent. The way the air hole intersects with the bowl a lot of times you will find it doesn't hit the very bottom, but tends to have air draw slightly off bowl bottom. It tends to intersect with the chamber radius and not dead bottom of the chamber. This is due to the intersecting angle and the fact the hole is coming down from the top. Not perpendicular. At least that is my view on it.

there might be something you could do depending on what the issue is. is the draft hole too high, too low? off center? if it's high you might try to build the bottom of the chamber up with some pipe mud. thats not really ideal, but it might help... and honestly anything other than it being properly drilled in the first place is gonna be less than ideal.
