I'm looking for lighter for my pipe.... I've been using a zippo with butane insert. Love it but would like to find one that has a flame on the side. I'm thinking for getting the zippo pipe lighter but I'm worried about using the lighter fluid. Or does it matter with pipes?

BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

From what I've read, the new lighter fluid "recipe" doesn't have the residual taste that it once did and I've heard several people say it's fine. My concern with the traditional Zippo lighter is that the tank size is small and, if you're doing a lot of relights, you may find yourself filling it after just a couple of bowls.
In calm conditions (no wind) I still prefer a match but I have a Zippo butane candle lighter and it works really well. It's around the $15 mark, holds a decent amount of butane and, if you need to relight when the tobacco is far down in the bowl, it's easy to get the end of it in there.

I can second the new formula on the zippo fluid. In my younger stupid days I ruined several great cigars using a zippo with the original fuel, cause hey, Zippos just look cool 
. But I just used a borrowed one with the new fuel when my butane ran empty and I must say I didn't taste a thing. I also let I burn off a few seconds to get rid if any "surge" of fluid that wicked up from sitting in my buddies pocket.

I use the pipe zippo with zippo fluid only. As long as you aren't overfilling you shouldn't notice a flavor from the fluid but that may be just me. The Ronsonol fluid I would avoid if you go that route though, it has a much stronger aroma etc than the zippo brand. I find I can get quite a few lights out of the zippo on a fill but the downside is the fluid evaporates over time too, not just while you use it.

Obviously cost factors in a lot to the decision. Xikar makes a few nice pipe lighters around $50-$60 that have Xikars lifetime guarantee. Jetline Lacardo is a nice pipe lighter as well for $25 with all the tools in the handle and side shooting soft flame.

i have three of these, and love them, as they are both soft flame AND torch. damned if i can find these online though...
and, in all fairness, i have a peterson branded "old boy" style i LOVE, but don't like to travel around with.

I've been using the Thunderbird soft side flame butane pipe lighter insert fit my Zippo and haven't had any issues. They also carry a lifetime warranty but you do have to cover postage to mail it in. Haven't had to make use of that, yet, though...
I had a Zippo Pipe lighter and I used only Zippo Fuel in it and there was no taste or anything nasty in the flavor like years past. Love it and will get another. If you are looking for a Fast Refillable one that is also kind of a throw away I would say get a Sidekick lighter I had one now for the better of 8 years and I love that I t is refillable. ONly down side is that after years the little metal ring at the top started to come off do to the flame heating the plastic while trying to light a pipe with some wind. Lasted another year before the piezo stopped working..

Where have you been getting them? Trying to find one, but have only seen a black/gold one on Amazon and gold isn't my style.

I absolutely LOVE my Zippo pipe lighter. There is a distinct aroma when I light it for the first time after refilling it but it dissipates after a few seconds as Stin mentioned. The reason I like it so much is that I can hold it flat against the bowl (but not actually touching it) and, when I draw it in, the flame goes straight into the bowl and doesn't touch the rim of the pipe. I've not gotten any charring on my bowl rims since starting to use it.

I just ordered one of these a few hours ago in solid brass. Works with Zippo lighter fluid, 100% waterproof and the fluid doesn't evaporate.
Please give us a review when you get it. That looks like a great lighter... nice score!
