  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Well I finally made it. And it works but it does need tweaked. And i need practice using it.

And i throughly cleaned this pipe. It was an estate pipe. A Sav from ebay.

Three passes thru with alcohol.

Still not happy with the reaming on it. Bad cake build up. And stem needs buffed bad. But it will be nice once I get it finished.

I just picked up an amphora 813 bent rhodesian estate pipe off of ebay yesterday... couldnt pass on the price ($9 shipped)... appears to be in decent condition.. Ive never smoked an amphora before.. and know almost nothing about the brand.. but I thought it would make a good restoration project... will have to go back through some of your old threads grrrrr and get myself smart on the process..

Ok, I am not very familiar with pipe resortation yet, but very instested in learning more. What is that contraption on the first picture for?

I just Googled it and it looks to be a Rhodesia style? I am really enjoying that pipe shape more and more.

Lol I'm far from an expert. I just shared what little bit of knowledge I have with the board since I was getting PMs about it. One of these days I will get my buffer station setup and do a better job. I just read about using 0000 steel wool and Sumatra oil to clean rustic pipes with. I'm still learning.

Basically a pipe retort will clean and sanitize a pipe. The brown liquid pic is an after pic of a pipe I had thought I had cleaned well.

dude that is nice you need to set up a "how to make and use a retort without blowing yourselft up" instructional thread
Not sure I could do that. U didn't see any pics of me putting out the fire when my rubber stopper leaked roflmao.

Couple of things i learned with this setup.

1. the tube was too long. The alcohol was cooling and returning to the flask before entering the pipe.

2. The erlenmeyer flask alto with the angle i preferred over a test tube and the price was right (free) is not the best choice. A 4 inch test tube holds 10 ml this flask holds 50 ml. I had to put way too much alcohol into the flask so it would flow into the pipe. 2 problems with that. A) took forever to heat over a candle and B ) way too much alcohol for the job.

3) made sure the rubber stopper is tight after u fill with alcohol. When the alcohol expands it may leak, running down the side of the flask or test tube and onto the lit candle. Just saying yo.
