  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Pipe/Tobacco dedication

I've seen many references to dedicating a pipe to one type of tobacco, in order to avoid mingling of overpowering flavors and aromas.

My question to you is what types do you group together to consider appropriate for a single briar pipe? I have five briars and want to be smart about how I use them.

I have smoked two of my briar pipes, one is for aromatics and the other has been used for latakia blends. I want one to be for Virginias, but I'm not sure if Va, VaPer and VaBur should be smoked regularly in the same pipe or not. Are there other types I should be prepared to have a dedicated pipe for as well?

I think most people that do segregate do so by Virginias, english, aro. I'm not sure how much a perique blend ghosts, but I think those are mainly kept in the VA pipe, I would assume a VaBur would be the same.

I don't have enough pipes to worry care about it though. I'm sure if you some a lot of English and than put a VA blend through there would be some contamination...

it depends mostly on your palate. will YOU notice a pure Va, or oriental, after a perique grenade or a lat bomb?

mine are anything goes (including aro), Va-based, and english styles. but i have a bunch of pipes, so nothing is too ghosted in so far. also, know you can salt treat to back a briar down, and dedicate it again later.

Well I have pipes I only smoke a lot of things in. I have one dedicated to Penzance. A Cavvichi. One dedicated to my "quiet" time English blends a full bent Barling, and a "quiet" time aro blend a full bent Lorenzo.

I have a Meer for "iffy" blends.

I have 320 for English and nording freehands for Va and VaBurs. (Cuz they are military bit and I have a church warden stem that I can swap with all my nord freehands.)

I have a bulldog, GBD, for cigar leaf and rhodies for english.

I have a devil Anse that I can't decide what to smoke in it. One day it's english. One day I think it should be for Va.

I could go on and on.

Part of the fun is figuring out what smokes best in which pipe then dedicate it to that blend.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like I don't have to worry too much about it, but will probably stick with three groupings for now: VAs, Aros, Latakias. I haven't had any Oriental blends yet, so not sure if I'll end up dedicating a briar to them or not.

The only dedicated pipe I have is a cob for Ennerdale.....which has a very very strong Lakeland flavor which I suspect would ghost pipes. All my other briars get used for all other blends. I really don't smoke aros. I will say I have been spending a lot of time with my new friend Old Joe Krantz!

My DGE short shanked lovat just got dedicated to Va/VaPer tobacco after smoking a bowl of Luxury Bullseye Flake(rubbed out) in it. It burned so perfectly. My Tinsky naked coral billiard will also be a VaPer pipe.
