Pipes taking the front seat...

So I'm curious who else has been favoring pipes over cigars? Every time I look in my humidor for something to smoke, I end up walking out empty handed and filling a bowl. I don't know why per say. I have plenty of fantastic cigars, and many I've never tried yet just waiting, but I feel more drawn to my small "cellar." I don't know if this is a phase or what, but it seems like 8 or 9 times out of 10 I'd rather just pipe. I feel like a neglectful parent... Ha...

I still enjoy a good cigar but, yeah, right now I find myself going for a pipe more often. Not sure why as a great cigar is such a pleasure. Maybe because I am still so new to pipes that the excitement level is higher than with cigars (for which I no longer really consider myself a true newb).

Also, as much as I enjoy the visual aesthetics of a well-rolled cigar, pipes for me are pieces of artwork and I am also drawn to that.

Yes and no. I sometimes really want to try a new baccy or just choose a pipe due to time constraints. I still smoke my cigars plenty enough. I do find that pipe smoke lingers on me and my mouth for a shorter period of time compared to cigars. So I hear "did you smoke today" much less when I choose pipe.

I've been favoring pipes now because I can't stand sitting outside in 110 degF heat for 2 hours. Plus, I look smarter with a pipe, I can fool someone into thinking I'm Mensa material until I talk.

I can agree with the last statement. Whenever I'm speaking to someone while I have a pipe, I make it a point that before I speak, I draw from the pipe. It makes me appear way smarter.

I still prefer the cigars, but, the time I spend with my pipe is so much more enjoyable to me. The cigars force me to slow down and relax, while the pipe is my choice to slow down and relax, if that makes sense.

I find myself smoking a pipe much more at home over cigars. I still haven't mastered it nearly enough to take it to gigs or on the road yet, so I find myself enjoying cigars while not at home. Also I'm kinda known as that roadie who is always chomping on a cigar with some of my clients so I've managed to bring several new people into the cigar fold. I still love both but at the moment each one has it's place. Also I really enjoy restoring estate pipes so that helps with the at home addiction ..... dammit Dave!

I am really hoping to develop a love for a pipe like I do cigars. Cigars are getting to expensive, and I too want to try to smoke indoors. Too hot outside for a big and tall guy like me. (Nice way to say fat)

i haven't had a pipe yet that had the dynamism, the range, of some of the great cigars i have had. that said, if you know what you're looking for, what your preferences are, most bowls of pipe tobacco are at least good, to really good: a poor roll, or storage situation, small damage to the wrapper, or just a blend that doesn't work for you, have actually led me to have more bad cigar experiences than pipe experiences (past poor packing and lighting). or, to put it another way, i would rather pipe to relax myself and pass the time, and save cigars for when i want an experience, if that makes sense.

also, as someone who frequently has problems coming upon an hour and a half to two hours actual free time, the ability to pack a bowl to fit your time constraints, and especially to come back to the same bowl a couple times, makes piping easier a lot of times.

which is cool, actually. i have been doing this so long, and have come across SO many cigars, it is ice for me to step back and actually approach them as a new and unique experience again

I second that last bit for sure. My lady actually enjoys the way pipe smoking makes me smell though, so I've got that going for am haha

Was thinking about this today and realized, I smoke the pipe as a substitute for a yard gar.

Instead of lighting a cigar that I may need to put down or might get ignored/go out or otherwise get ruined, I'll pack and light a pipe.

I can relight, adjust the pack, set it down, the smoke doesn't burn my eyes when I hold it in my mouth. Basically it's perfect for smoking when I can't put my feet up and dedicate two hours to a cigar.

Bottom line though is the bottom line, it's much much cheaper. While I do have a pretty decent cigar stock, I still don't want to pull a $5 or more cigar out unless I'm going to get $5 worth of pleasure from it. Many times I feel I get $5 pleasure out of a <$1 bowl, where a super cheapo cigar wouldn't do the same.

As a bonus, I'll smoke a pipe in the truck. At least with aromatics, as it doesn't leave the awful stale smoke smell behind. I'll occasionally smoke a cigar in the truck, but only if I'm going to be on the highway for 3 hours plus with the windows down. I don't like the smell of old stale smoke.

Exactly this. I find myself smoking a pipe during the day in my office/bedroom while I work and reserve a cigar when I can sit down and truly appreciate it. The pipe I can set down and come back to and is way more cost effective, and I do love smoking my pipes. I seem to always prefer a good cigar though.

I've had a long journey with the leaf. Smoked cigarettes from when I was 16-26. Smoked cigars along the way and picked up the pipe when I was 19. I worked for a guy that smoked his pipe all day long every day and he was trying to help me kick the cigarettes. I smoked the pipe on and off for a few years and quit cigarettes. I then went into good cigars and had the time to smoke them each night. The pipes went cold. Family life changes things and now for the last year and a half I'm a piper first and a cigar smoker second. Not that I don't still love cigars but they just don't fit where I am. So, they age and I reach for them when I can. I've learned more about pipes in the last year and a half than I ever imagined possible.
Piping can be cheaper but it's been about the same for me expense-wise but that's my own doing. My wife has always tolerated my cigars but doesn't mind my pipe smoking either. I don't come in and hear her say "you reek" lol. there's a time and place for both. Just glad I'm not smoking cigarettes for the last 13 years.
