  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Hello Brothers,

I've decided to get into the pipe game and to be honest it seems very intimidating. There are so many options, techniques, methods, etc.. and it kind of feels like when I first started smoking cigars. I have looked at a lot of threads in this pipe forum and gained a ton of knowledge so far.

I have decided to go with a Dr Grabow for my first pipe. Is this a good choice? I thought about getting a corn cob pipe but decided to go with something that looks a little nicer, plus they are in the $30 range so they are not terribly expensive. I would like some help on some noob questions:

I see that cleaning the pipes are very important, but do I need to clean it immediately after smoking? Like most here, I smoke to unwind and relax. After smoking I'm not sure I would want to get into a cleaning regiment right after I finish. If I set the pipe on my desk or somewhere else will it stink up the place?

Also, there are a TON of options when it comes to tobaccos. I would like to smoke a bowl occasionally in the morning with the paper and coffee. What are some recommended blends for morning smokes.

I typically like cigars with cameroon or sun grown wrappers (if that means anything in the pipe world), so what would be some good afternoon or evening blends.

Also, is smoking a pipe indoors any easier with the lingering aromas than cigar smoke? If I had to smoke inside are there blends that are recommended that smell really good?

Thank you for all the help. I hate to be a nuisance so I apologize if everyone is tired of these "starter" questions.

First of all you are never a nuisance. We are here to help and support each other.
My opinion on your first pipe would be to go with a corn cob but the Grabow should be just fine.

Cleaning is very easy and just takes about a minute or two if you do it on a regular basis. It just consists of running a couple pipe cleaners through and getting out the oils. As far as the pipe stinking it depends on your sensitivity. I don't smell it at all on my desk and I have six of them.

Trying out the pipe can be very overwhelming and you need to give it time. You can easily try it once or twice and give up but in reality you should smoke for a couple months on a somewhat regular basis before you decide if you like it or not.

The tobaccos are nothing like cigars and they can vary widely. They have aromatics that are very fragrant and smell great even inside sometimes and they have English blends that are stronger and taste more like the natural tobacco. Then there is everything in between which consist of hundreds of others.

You need to find a pipe shop that can give you some samples of bulk blends and they can also show you how to pack it in person. If not YouTube is great for that. As far as other samples the pipe box passes are perfect for that.

Just remember patience is key.

+1 to everything rex said.

Welcome to the dark side.

Cobs are great for experimenting. Ive only tried one dr grabow but I know people on other forums that love them.

Just pack it and smoke it. Like hoshy said do youtube to find ways to pack. Dont worry about relights. Use a soft flame lighter. Ronson makes a nice affordable refillable one.

I dont clean mine after every smoke. Only when I get around to it.

A nice shop with have bulk baccy. around 4 bucks an ounce. Shop can advise on whats good and popular. Also if it smells good then try it.

Ask questions. ask lots of questions. Lots of good botl pipers here.

Welcome to pipes brother. I consider myself still a newb at pipes as well, however, I can answer a couple questions. Smoking indoors is much more tolerable than a cigar indoors. Pipes just generally smell better. They don't stink up the place after smoking, Like Hosh, I smell nothing with it sitting right next to me. Cigar tobacco and pipe tobacco are nothing alike, so your best bet is to pick up some samples and find what ya like. Most of all don't get discouraged at how many relights it is going to take to get packing down...worry not my friend, it is worth the learning

I just fell down this slippery slope the exact same way you are, I think a Missouri meerschaum was the best place to start they smoke easier compared to the briar I have and seem more forgiving also if I screw it up it was only 8$ from mars cigars

The country gentlemen seems to be my favorite
