Can anyone tell me the difference between the 40gb and the 80gb, besides backward compatibility?

I don't think there are any differences to speak of between the two consoles... I guess its mostly based on your need if you happen to be a serious gamer then 80GB may tickle your fancy though if you're an occasional/casual gamer like myself you may want to go with the 40GB version or get a Wii like me!

Here's a little analysis I found on CNet that may help you http://reviews.cnet.com/consoles/sony-playstation-3-40gb/4505-10109_7-32733577.html?tag=tpr

just scroll down to where they have the detailed review

Cliff, not much of a difference at all, and the 80G difference is one to be ignored. Increasing the size of the hard drive is cake with the PS3. All you need is any 2.5" Laptop HD and you are good to go, you can swap it out in probably 5-10 minutes with nothing more than a screwdriver IRRC. Unless you are dead set on playing PS2 games on the PS3 (why?) it's a no brainer. Save the $100 or whatever and get the 40GB. Use that saved $100 ($200 if you get a Sony Credit Card-check out www.dealnews.com for that deal) and use it to buy a 200GB laptop hard drive if you really want extra space.

I have the 80gb version and that is only because when I decided to buy one it's all they had in the store. It would have been cool to not pay the extra $100 but I figured that's all the AAFES store on base would get. I was wrong about two months later they got the 40gb versions. Oh well. I don't even need the storage space as I'm not a huge gamer I got it for the blu-ray after all.

another reason for the space is that you can store movies, music and games on the hard drive so if you utilize it to its full potential then the 80 may not be that bad of an idea

The plan is to turn the PS3 into what now know as a Tivo device, therefore the 80gb will be able to hold more data obviously but it will mean a lot when you start storing shows and movies and all that...

But we shall see when that happens...

True Clay, but once that gets going I have a feeling anyone really utilizing it is going to find that even 80GB is nothing close to enough. That's why I love the fact that it is so darned easy to swap out the HD in the PS3.

I thought the other differences were the no chrome, there might not be any slots for SD cards and the like, and I heard something about no wifi but I would check on that one.

I think it's mostly the SD card slots and stuff.

No chrome? Hmmm..just checked the Sony site and I guess I see what you mean. Damn, who wants to pay extra for Chrome on a PS3? LOL.

The 80GB does come with CompactFlash/Memory Stick/SD slots whereas the 40GB does not. Not sure how this really matters, but I'm sure there is a use for it.

Wifi works on both, it's how I'm set up on my network.

Really, if you can still find it anywhere, the 60GB is what you want as it has the extras of the 80GB (maybe not Chrome though, sorry bling-boys!) without the extra price tag. Pretty sure they are all gone though.

Here is the page from Sony's web site with the specs for each.

What would the CompactFlash, SD Memory Card and Memory Stick Duo card slots be used for? To add more memory?

I have not a clue Cliff. They wouldn't add very much memory, but I guess they might have enough to be able to save profiles on or some such so you could play on a different PS3 with your profile? I'm just wild ass guessing here.

That just doesn't seem to important to me since I don't really listen to music at home or have many pictures.

I'm thinking about cashing in some credit card points and get the 40gb in time for GTA IV.
