Gentlemen, am i correct in advising that the only harmful mold is colored (green, blue, aqua, etc) and that the white mold can be wiped off and smoked without a problem? That is what i was told at least and it looks like that is the advice that has been given here.
Yes...the tan colored variety is just white that's been aged.
There are toxins involved with the colored variety that's going to change the taste of your smoke too.
There is some sites that actually explain the mold phenom a little better and really get in depth with what the different kinds are, but I can't find the link.
It was suggested that the mold is a manifestation of other compounds becoming mineralized on the cigar. It's from using an aqueous solution that contains other compunds in the solution (think tap water or regular bottled water) that will leave a mineral deposit. It does grow like mold (usually in the bottom rows of boxes out of light) but it's also an enviorment with little or no air flow to inhibit growth.
Either way, before you smoke it, it should be wiped down with a damp paper towel ( don't want to spread all those spores) and smoke it. If you're worried about spreading it, put the box in a bag and don't move it around too much. If it's a single that's been banging around in tupperware with all your other sticks, well....you'll see it on your other cigars eventually.
