Well after the the eating and drinking I did Christmas day I had
Warres Warrior Special Reserve and lets say it was the best bottle of port I have had to date.

We had a good bottle last night as well. Wish I was a bigger port fan, but for some reason I just cant seem to get used to a certain flavor in it.

Well I'm new into ports so I did a little Google on Warres Warrior Special Reserve, it's under $20 a bottle! And that good! I like Six Grapes myself, gone through several bottles now and never had a bad glass. Any port experts out there than can recommend a few more?

Try a Cockburn 20 yr Tawny, A Ficklin 10 yr Tawny or anything from a 1997 Vintage port. great year. The 2003 vintage ports will be good too in about 7 years.

I just had some 40 yr old stuff last night that was incredible.

I must have had a bad experience. I tried a port years ago and did not enjoy any of it. I choked down half a glass and found somethiing better. I may have to try something out again soon. I can't imagine any of you saying good things about the taste tragedy I had.

I have a bottle each of Warres Warrior Special Reserve & Fonseca Bin No. 27 from 2000. Not sure if the age will help a standard port such as these or not. Also have a Dow's Vintage Port from 2003.

The age will help any port and wine. The 2003 Dow's Vintage will be great in a few years. The experts say that 1977, 1997, 2000 and 2003 were good years for port. I know the 77 was great, I know the 97 is good. Had the 2000, but needs more time, so mine will sit for more time. The 03 is no way ready to go.

All the aged tawnys are great now. The longer the better... If you can get a 30 or 40 year, standby for smooth.

Port makes an excellent pairing with a cigar as the sweetness of it makes a good foil for the flavor of a cigar. I have to be in the right mood for port, sometimes the heaviness of it is too much, but a good tawney is great when the time is right. Not all ports are created equal, perhaps you had bad batch. Try the tawney ports first like Taylor Fladgate, Warres Otima, Cockburn's or Six Grapes. Of those, I prefer the Warres the most. The Taylor, while excellent, is a little heavier, syrupier if that's a word.

I have a very good friend who lives in Milwaukee, his grandmother's name is Macy, as in Macys! This friend is set financially, let's just say that. We were in the lounge where I work a few years back, dead of winter, got there about 11:00am and left at 10:00PM. During that time we both smoked 7 cigars and we went through SIX bottles of wine between us. I got so freakin' tanked, I stopped on the way home and slept in a park and ride. Now, the thing is, he brought in 3 bottles and after we finished those, we walked across the street to the liquor store and bought three more, well, he bought three more. Not one of them was less than $200, I told him, "dude, I could've gotten tanked on $10 wine just as well." I didn't have another glass of wine for a couple years, it's just recently I can stomach port. That was a bad night.


So I think I'm gonna look for:

Warres Otima 10 Tawny
Taylor Fladgate Port 95
Smith Woodhouse LBV 1995

OK, I bought a bottle of Graham's 10 year Tawny Porto, uncorked it at work at the lounge tonight and I really like it!!! :bottle:
