My question is how in the world tobacco or cigars from 1962 or earlier could possibly be any good. I realize aging is good, but damn, 46+ years???? Seems like they would have to been kept in ideal conditions and handled with kid gloves for nearly 5 decades.

I've never had the pleasure of having a cigar that old, but I know several people who have. There are two things that can happen. A cigar can age out. Basically the cigar looses oils and the tobacco breaks down to the point that it has no flavor.

I've also heard alot of guys talking about a second life, where the cigar regains it's flavor. Scientifically I don't see how this happens. I think it's more a case of the cigar being stored right so that the oils are not lost to the surrounding and the tobacco does not dry out.

The point behind aging is that the tobaccos have time to mingle and even out. The longer they age the more the oils of the different leaves blend. It will take away some of the flavors and bring some out. It can make some cigars much light and some more full bodied. It all depends on the time and the tobacco. All that being said, 46 years would allow for some great mingling.

I just don't believe there's any quality pre-embargo Cuban tobacco left after the cigar boom.

Pre-embargo cigars, average one's anyways, are not that rare and not that expensive as some people think. Having smoked a number of them (read enough to recognize the taste and to have some familiarity) I personally like them. They have alot of great vintage tobacco flavour, very different from fresh cigars. Most of the clear havanas I've smoked have been machine mades like white owls, etc, but they are 100% cuban tobacco and smoke great. They're great for a change of pace and a special treat once in a while.

There are a couple of these smokes around, pinar, gurkah had a pre-embargo shaggy foot, and a few others. There is alittle pre-embargo tobacco in each cigar. The entire cigar is not Pre-embargo Baccy. There are several stories I've read on where this tobacco comes from. The one I like is that a defunct cigar factory in jersey somewhere, had a big storage room in the basement full of pre embargo tobacco. It was in the original wood barrels, and turned out to be smokeable. When some one bought the old factory and went to tear it down, they found the store room. Jack pot...I could easily be wrong about any of the details, but that is how I remember it.

The use of an authentic Vintage 1999 Jamastran Corojo wrapper (one of the first Corojo crops ever successfully grown outside Cuba) and a filler which is partially (20%) comprised of vintage 1962 Pre-Embargo Cuban Tobacco creates a very well rounded cigar that is distinctly Camacho.

Be careful when looking at current production cigars that claim to be Pre-Embargo, most are created from tobacco grown from Cuban Tobacco seed but NOT grown in Cuba!

Ask anyone about why Tobacco from Cuba is better then Tobacco grown someplace else they will tell you it is all in the SOIL!

The makers of Crown Royal pulled a similar stunt to what Dprice was saying about finding reserves in an old warehouse.

Crown Royal XR goes for +$150/fifith. They say they found and old barrel depository that they thought burned down or something like that, they opened the barrels and JACKPOT!!! an unbelievably great blended whiskey came out of them. They said that quantities were extremely limited, so get it while you can...that was 3 years ago and i can still get it at any liquor store.

While it is very VERY good, the story is hogwash.

I have to believe the pre-embargo stories are of similar kind.

My guess is you would never even know the tobacco was there. 20% of the filler? You might just be able to make out just a tiny little hint of the flavor of the pre-embargo tobacco. On the other hand, it could have lost 75% of its flavor anyway and then you are almost guaranteed to have no idea it's there. Just my opinion, but hey.

I don't think you have to believe the story to buy the product. If you did you might find your choices quite limited. What I think can be believed is that they are saying this to tell you that this is a very special product that they have, and you should really really try it.

What is always more important to me is, is the cigar special? Did the last guy to smoke it say it is great? If so, try it. If you need to believe that there is actually 50 year old tobacco in that cigar, you should pass, especially since there will never be any way to know for sure that you were not lied to.

I've got my own, thanks. Unless of course you can get a super good price on it. $150s the cheapest i've seen it at...most places it's now up to $175...and somehow they keep finding more reserves of it!

I will say it is very, VERY good. It may be worth the price. I drink it as a sippin' shot. Fill a fat double shot glass, not the tall skinny ones, and sip it for about a minute. Kinda miakes me feel like a cowboy, sippin my whiskey like they sometimes do in the old western movies.

i've had a couple of the gurkha shaggy foots,, given a couple away. and have a few left. the ones i smoked were very good, and got them for about $11 per stick. i agree, it's more of a novelty, but good nonetheless!!

are these not the same as teh camacho 1962? check out cbid. you can get them for about $40 a bundle. why are these so much more?

i got these 7 years ago, from cbid (fivers). bails found in a wherehouse, sold at christies auctions for $$$,,, gurkha blended the tobacco with their own to make their smokes.

The pre-embargo Camachos are a shoot off of the regular 1962s. I think it's nothing more than a 1962 blend with some "pre-embargo" filler thrown in. So I would imagine it tastes MUCH the same. The 1962s are still real good smokes especially at the closeout type prices you can usually get on cbid. I wouldn't be able to justify the price for these pre-embargo ones though. I would just buy real CCs while I'm traveling.
