Guys, I will be living in the US for approx. 8 months so I will be getting or I think I should get, a prepaid cellphone service from a carrier. Loking around saw 3 options:

T-mobile, AT&T and Straight-talk (which uses those 2 biggest carriers.

Which one is better? I want unlimited data, some plan to call Dominican Republic (if not, I guess I will use Skype) and good reception. I will be on the east coast.

I am not sure if any of those are unlimited data anymore. I think Virgin Mobile is though. I think T-Mobile used to be but recently may have changed.

T-Mobile itself is a pretty small player; if you are traveling around the US you might want to stick with a provider that is a little bigger. My understanding of Straight-talk (Walmart) uses a number of the larger carriers (including T-Mobile believe it or not). Virgin Mobile USA uses the Sprint network.

Having used a number of carriers in my time, I recommend getting a phone that uses At&t OR Verizon.

Building upon what Monsterdg was saying, before you limit your options you should look into which providers have coverage in the areas you will be in

Thanks guys. I will be having coverage from all major networks (verizon, at&t, sprint and t-mobile) but I will mainly be picking from those who can activate GSM since I already have a good GSM phone (hence the prepaid option).

look into Ting, they use sprints network and i hear you only pay for what you use. They seem to have very competitive prices.

I use Boost mobile. They run off of Sprints network. Depending on where your at, the 4g is unlimited, the 3g is limited to 5gigs. I usually am only on 4g in wash dc the rest is 3g and I never go over. Unlimited text and unlimited minutes. I have the samsung galaxy 2 and it runs like 65 a month with the hotspot turned on. I think its 55 without the hotspot. Virgin Mobile is similar, i changed from virgin to boost.

Thought I could bring this up to confirm:

I was gonna go with T-Mobile which for less than $80 will let me call the DR (unlimited), unlimited text and calls in US and unlimited 3g-4g data. But, today AT&T announced a no-contract option, so i'll wait at the end of the month to make my choice for when I move to DC next month.
