  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

What do you carry and how do you carry it?

How many pipes? Daytrip? To pipe club?

What accroutments?

Do you carry a cigar cutter?

Czech tool, pipe nail, multiples?

Lighters, matches? What kind of lighter? Also carry a torch?

Baccy tin or pouch or combo?

When I carried my maxpedition bags I carried everything and multiples. 3 lighters. Umpteen different tamper tools. Pipe cleaners. Cigar cutter and torch. The small store bought bags always seem to small for the one pipe I want to take. Forget carrying two. Then my two pipe bag doesn't have room for my baccy.

Then there's pipe club. I carry a backpack. I do have a really nice pipe roll so I can carry multiple pipes but then everything else is tossed in the backpack.

Or do you just shove a pipe in your shirt pocket and go?

This is my entire road carry. Homemade multi-tool with cutter, pipe tool and bottle opener, 2 Venturi "The Pipe" in day glow orange that can be smoked repeatedly thx to its lining, 2 Djeep lighters that work for cigars and pipes, one day glow orange traveldor, a bag of pipe cleaners and a Swiss Army cigar knife. I carry tobacco in ziplock bags so I can just give it to a BOTL if he wants the tobacco to try. That's it.

Here is why I asked.

This little project started out as a pipe roll but I couldn't figure out what I wanted in it. Laid out things several times several ways and couldn't make a decision so I just made it into a tobacco pouch.

Not trying to "reinvent the wheel" just trying to make a pipe roll with everything I want in it.

When I carry my piping material somewhere, it's pretty light - two pipes, a couple of baggies of tobacco, my tamper and my Czech tool, some pipe cleaners (I use an old cigar tube from a Fuente King TT) lighter, and my cigar cutter (just in case). I keep it all in a 10-count Herf-a-Dor. Fits perfectly and I don't have to worry about the pipes getting crushed or broken.

Those are some fancy set ups! I guess I do the ghetto version, a cheap nylon dop kit bag with a couple tobaccos in ziploc in one pocket. The other pocket fits a couple smaller pipes in the elastic straps, the plastic toothbrush holder thing is filled with cleaners, pipe tool and a couple Bics get tossed in as well. Works well for me!

It looks cool but I really think I wouldn't like lugging s briefcase around.
I definitely wouldn't use it on a daily basis but if I was travelling, it would be nice to have the peace of mind about my pipes not getting damaged. We;re heading on a cruise in October and I may get it for that.

If I could find a pipe club near me to join, I'd carry that to and from there. But I agree - if not for those specific circumstances, I can't see myself lugging it around. The safety of the hard case comes with a price - the weight.

My issue is size and weight and have everything i need in it. On the bike or in my gear bag at work. Small enough to throw in the tourpack on the bike or gear bag and big enough for the essentials.

Every professional photographer is a member of the "camera bag of the month club" - we can never settle on that "perfect" bag. We all know it doesn't actually exist but that doesn't stop us from constantly buying new bags in the hope that we stumble on it.

I suspect that pipers do the same with their gear bag!
EXACTLY!
My perfect pipe bag doesnt exist
YET.

But it will.

This is my every day kit and I don't leave home without it. Mostly thanks to the guys on this forum but the Maxpedition Beefy works a treat!

Every Sunday I clean my pipes, rotate and restock my kit, so all I need for 7 days fits in here..

1. 3 pipes
2. Czech pipe tool and Savinelli adaptor
3. At least 5 different blends
4. Pipe cleaners, old maple syrup bottle with alcohol for cleaning.
5. Pipe stand, Chopping board and blade for slicing plug.
6. Zippo pipe lighter and a cheap backup
7. Cigar cutter and Tubos if I'm smoking away but cigars are usually for home so rarely.
8. Enough Napkins for a week of cleans and a clean cloth for buffing but also provides a buffer between the blade/zippo/cutter and the pipes so they don't scratch.

This kit is awesome and suits my ritual perfectly.

I got a soft case from Smokingpipes.com, believe it was $50??? It's not the best but gets the job done for me when I went to Florida, quick weekend trips and to and from my local B&M.

That "pipeador" from etsy is nice but way out of my price range for something I might use maybe a handful of times!?

I normally take cigars when I travel and leave the pipes at home. I do have one small pipe bag that holds one pipe, some cleaners, a pipe tool, and a few ounces of baccy. Still trying to find a baccy that agrees with my mouth's chemistry better so I can start smoking the pipes more without tearing up my mouth.

Anxious to see what you come up with Dave, I have been eyeballing some leather pipe rolls on instagram and will be going that direction myself one day.
