Even outside?Oh...and matches are the best way to enjoy a pipe in my opinion!
I've never had an issue. I use long wood matches. They stay lit well...and cedar match sticks produce a wonderful smell.Even outside?
Careful with briar pipes. They like to have a day or so to rest between smokes. You can burn them out otherwise. So I am about 5 bowls in now and have a few newbie observations:
edit:
- I will admit, it took me a while to acquire a taste for cigars. Pipes on the other hand start you off with incredible flavor (I have been smoking McClelland virginia non-aro), and intoxicating leftover beard note's vs the "how can I get this off of me" notes from some cigars.
- Tongue bite, even though I have not had it bad at all, is a building thing that sneaks up on you. I think to heavy when relighting has contributed to what little I have gotten.
- My take on the "Frank" method for packing lowered my relights considerably. I simply loosely fill the bowl tapping the sides so it all falls down, then I take a 3 finger wad and place it on top of the bowl, hold it down with my thumb on one hand and pull some of the excess over hang away. Then I fold up and over from all sides stuffing down with the broad flat part of my thumb until nicely packed slightly below the rim. Forms a nice wad above looser packed tobacco below so as you tamp down it stays consistent.
- I am loving the two McClelland virginia blends that I have (I think one has a little Black Cav in it by looks) but want to amp up the flavors. From what I have read, Lane 1Q is next on my list. Looking for that room note that makes people want to follow you.
- This is really fun and a lot more convenient than cigars as I can fire up a bowl on my way to work and it doesn't stink up the car and there isn't a defined time commitment.
- A lighter with integrated tools seems inevitable as there is a lot of "stuff" to pipe smoking although the cheap czech tool and bic have worked well (the bic being first on the replacement list).

- Forgot to add that it is rare that I finish a cigar and immediately want to grab another one, although it has occurred once or twice. However, every time I have finished a pipe bowl, and especially 30-40 minutes after I am craving more.
