You want a thick paste of salt. You don't want it runny. The hygrometer should read 75% with this test.

Hell, to be honest I have no idea how you calibrate a hydrometer. The others have pretty much covered hygrometers.

Thick paste and 75%.

A hydrometer measures specific gravity and is one of the tools that home brewers use. I just figured you were making some beer!

Well, I will be the odd man out and say do not waste time on the salt test. I have done some serious experimentation with it and found it to swing from mildly to wildly innacurate. Unless you get your mix exactly right, you will never know for certain your degree of accuracy. Spend the money for a calibration Humidi-Pak from one of our vendors and you will be assured of an accurate reading. I never recommend the salt test.

It helps you figure out the alcohol content of the beer. Here's to high gravity!!

This is what I would do as well.

A trick RonC taught me was to get an airtight jar.
Stick a boveda 65% or 70% and the hygrometer.
leave for 24 hours at least.

The hygrometer should jive with the boveda pack indicated RH
