recommend me external hdd

A year ago I'd have never imagined it, but 1TB seems smallish. If you think you need 1TB, you probably need 2. Or 3....

but yea it does seem strange, I need to do a little inventory and house cleaning to see how much data I really have and if I can stay in budget with going bigger

No kidding....one year ago I thought I was going big with a 750. Wish I'd gotten 2TB.

No seagate or No WD. Both terrible companies with terrible drives.

Don't want to be a douche.... we use LaCie ruggeds at my work and they all failed within months.

iomega or gtech would be my recommendation.
