So I told my wife I was thinking about getting a fire pit for the back yard to make smoking in the winter more tolerable. (And the kids love having fires) So she says, maybe I will have to join you for some cigars then, because she likes sitting by a fire. So what can you guys recommend for a new smoker who will probably like something light and not spicy? And of course not too expensive in case she doesn't like it and wants to pitch it. I saw in todays smoke someones wife was having a short story which seems like a good start. Other ideas?

any principe sized padron (might be a little pricey, but hey!)
papas fritas
oliva connecticut reserve #4 (or V #4 if you can find them)

my main point here is small cigars with big flavor. we little ones that are more demure, but can and will burn for a while, and deliver flavors.

When my girlfriend told me she wanted to try cigars I thought about the path I took. I started at infused and flavored lines so I went to the B&M when the guys saw me looking at the infused lines they were shocked and wanted to know what I was thinking! So I proceeded to tell them what I was doing. They told me a lot of ladies enjoy the CAO flavored lines like (Elaine's Dream... Etc) so that's just what I got and she smoked it all the way to a nub and said she enjoyed it. Just my experience

Cao flavors are great because they are mild and mildly infused. If she doesn't like infused try the Fuente Queen B's. Very lovely sweet cigars for around $6.50. Also the Hemingway lines are great for beginners.

The La Duena line was created with the female palate in mind. Janny Garcia, in particular. Blended by Jaime Garcia and Pete Johnson, She said "They tried to make something I really like. I didn’t want something too strong, and I like the sweetness of this wrapper." They make a Petite Belicoso 4.7"x48.

Cant believe no one has mentioned a PCR. My wife will smoke a PCR, as its a smaller vitola. She's not out for a crazy length of time, and the stick is amazing in general. That's really my winter smoke as well, so she gets to smoke what I am smoking and not think that its some crappy yard gar.

My wife also dabbled into the Java line by Drew Estate/Rocky Patel. She liked it at first, but the sticks did leave a strong sweet flavor on her lips. At first, that was fine, but afterword, it just became a game of how much she can tolerate.

I personally would look into the Tatuaje PCR's and see if she can get into that. You wont be wasting any money IMO, because they're absolutely great sticks anyways!

Good luck, and enjoy brother!

We stereotype female smokers, but it really depends on their palate, just like it does with ours. I'd approach her like I would any new cigar smoker. What appeals to her? A lot of girls gravitate towards the flavored and fruity. My wife won't touch anything fruit-flavored. Her favorite drink is single malt, Islay Scotch... neat. Trying to give her an Acid might get me punched! But, her good friend loves appletinis and cosmos. She's very unlikely to enjoy the Tatuaje Noella Reserva my wife thinks is incredible.

I usually base my recommendation for a cigar on what kind of drink the woman likes, cause it gives a good idea of what kind of flavors she prefers and how bold she prefer those flavors are. If she likes fruity, go infused. If she hates fruity but likes light beer, go for a Connie or a mild CC. If she likes Porters and Stouts, go with a chocolatey maduro. If she likes IPAs, go with a Habano wrapper or a bolder CC. If she likes Scotch, maybe go for a Pepin or Tat. If she likes Tequilla.... run.

Mine threw away the flavored stick I gave her, and snatched the BOTL lancero out of my hand. She likes full-bodied stuff.

I believe Mickeymorris' lady was similar, as she was smoking an LCC at our HERF. All broadleaf goodness.

+1 to this. ^ But also, I have found that even most people that don't like infused cigars (myself included)will often like the Drew Estate Java Maduro. Its not a bad idea to offer it. I have gotten my girl to try a few puffs here and there but not a whole stick (she says it takes too long to smoke.) And her tastes are just as varied as mine. Don't limit her, you wouldn't limit yourself. Throw a fiver together for her of the ones you think she will most like and tell her don't be discouraged if you don't like them all but we have to figure out what you do like, so you can enjoy this as much as I do. And pay attention to her when she smokes, she may like one characteristic of a certain cigar(like that its sweet) but not another( like that its earthy). Eventually you'll be able to say ok well she likes a stick with a spicy/sweet profile (or whatever she ends up liking) and can easily find a stick she'll enjoy.

My wife LOVES Cao Cherrybombs. I have to admit I don't mind a puff or two either.

She's also pretty fond of a Fuente Curlyhead (or deluxe). It's just one of those sticks that even someone who hates smoke would agree smells good burning.

For some reason the only "real" cigar, and decent size vitola she has ever nubbed has been a Kristoff of any variety. She loves those- not sure why

I agree with the folks who are suggesting not to take a "girly" approach to this. Many Fuentes are a great start for any smoker, I second the Mag R44 suggestion. Medium bodied classic Cuban smokes are also a great option. I'd recommend a corona size -- not so thin that it has to be smoked super carefully, but not something that will take more than an hour to smoke either.

My wife is all about the Oliva Melanio in any of the smaller vitolas, or the Epernay... At the Annual Herf, JDog gave her a Petit Edmundo (I think. Correct me if I am wrong, Jdog) and she was in heaven. At the same time, she is not a fan of the DPG Black labels.

I think medium body/big flavor is the way to go.
