Looking to purchase a economical auto loading .22 the budget is Max $200. The ones I've looked at are the Mossberg 702 plinkster, marlin 795, and remignton 597. I'm leaning towards the Marlin just because they are one of the most reliable .22 out there. Uncle has a model 60 for 15yrs and still works perfectly, looking at the 795 cause i prefer detachable magazine over tube fed for day at the range.

Is there another one i should consider? The Mossberg 702 is cheaper but anyone know how reliable they are? Any advice/suggestions are appriciated. Thanks.

What about the Ruger 10/22. I'm pretty sure they are still under 200 for the base model. I have 3 of them and they all shoot great. Plus you can mod the heck out of them as $$ permit.

This would be the direction I would take. I have a 30+ year old 10/22 that still works like a top, and the aftermarket is enormous. Magazine fed, semi-auto, fully customizable, low price - they are hard to beat.

New someone would mention the ruger 10/22. If i could find one at $200 be a no brainer. Maybe it's just where i live but cheapest they come is $260 where as i can get the marlin for $170.

How about a Marlin 60 or a Marline 90? I just sold my Marlin 60 for $100 cash to someone who wanted to do some plinking. It's a great gun with a tube magazine.

...but yeah, 10/22 is going to be the go-to gun. Might just want to shop around for a good deal.

FYI, I just dug through my local gun forum and someone just recently sold a 10/22 for $175 and it was in good condition too. Deals are out there, you just have to find them that's all

For a good Ruger 10/22, from a reputable dealer... you're right... you're looking at 230-330 dollars, depending on options selected.

That said... if 200 dollars is your limit...... I'd simply recommend wating and saving up the extra 30 bucks (example: my local Cabala's has a 18.5 inch blued barrel, birchwood stock Ruger 10/22 for 229 bucks and you can usually work with them, at the counter, so they throw in things like mags, ammo, sling, drag-bag, etc...).

You knew someone would mention it because they have proven performance... have sold millions of them... have the highest customer satisfaction levels at their price point... are able to be customized as you go along later... etc...

Anyway... if it were me, and I had 200 bucks to spend...... I'd wait until I had 230 to spend and go with a Ruger 10/22. You can probably even try to start looking for a used one and possibly find one in your range anyway!
Patience is a virtue. Think this is exactly what i'll do. I know if i drive a little farther from home can probably find better deals out there. Like you said there is also a huge aftermarket selection for the 10/22 where the marlin has very few.

Check out local Pawn Shops for the ones you're looking for, especially if you go the 10/22 route. Recent production 10/22s, to put it gently, are garbage. If you can find an older one, however... then that'd be great.

Do Pawn Shops in Cali sell guns? I've found them to be an excellent place to buy firearms on the cheap.
Absolutely they do. I worked with a guy a few weeks ago who's other job was as an owner of a pawn shop. He says the sheer volume of guns moving through his store has been incredible since Obama was elected. The FFL fees at pawn shops if you do transfers tend to be less as well.

Yup, they are free out here, at most $15.
