Hacienda La Esmerlda set a record yesterday when 10 50lb bags of coffee went for $130 per lb at the Best of Panama auction. Way more then the $50.25 it went for last year.
There's a lot of discussion in coffee circles about whether this is good or bad for the Specialty Coffee industry and how the public will perceive a cup of coffee that could retail for as much as $15.
I've never had H La E coffee before but I've heard it's exquisite. Even so, I'm not sure I'd pay that kind of money for coffee. Apparently many of the other coffees were fantastic but only brought prices in the single digits per pound.
