REVIEW DETAILS

APPEARANCE: 14/15
A silky smooth golden brown wrapper with a perfectly squared-off triple cap
covers this lonsdale. There are two small water spots visible on the wrapper
near the foot. The cigar's aroma is sweet and pungent. Overall, this is an
extremely attractive cigar that practically makes my mouth water.

ASH: 9/10
Firm ash with alternating light and dark bands on the surface. Ash holds on
for over an inch before dropping off and landing intact in the ash tray.

DRAW: 10/10
The draw is firm, but not tight--which feels just about perfect to me for
smaller gauge cigars.

BURN: 9/10
The cigar burns consistently with no touch ups needed, but it does seem to
slightly lean to one side.

SMOKE: 9/10
The cigar creates a thin, elegant line of wispy smoke, while the draw makes a
thick volume of white smoke.

FLAVOR: 19/20
On pre-light draw, the wrapper tastes slightly salty and dry on the lips. On
initial light, the cigar bowls me over with an intense grassy, woody flavor
undercut with a lemon pepper twang. Quickly, a sweet floral undertone develops
and delicately balances out the grassy/woody flavors. This is type of intricate
flavor delivery that I find when I smoke the "good stuff" in my humidor.

UNIQUENESS: 8/10
While I've smoked other cigars like this one, I must admit that there are very
few cigars in the world that are quite as special as this one.

FINISH: 14/15
The flavors don't change much at the end--which is a good thing since the
flavors are nearly perfect to begin with--but they do gain in intensity and
strength. A very solid finish that begs to be smoked to the nub.

TOTAL: 92 Points

PS - From just the appearance alone I got a good idea what this cigar
was--and after tasting it, I'm 99% positive on what it is (unless it's
some sort of special edition I'm not be familiar with).

Sorry I blew the last one...had family in town for the past week and never got a free minute. I'll make sure this one goes down tomorrow night.

APPEARANCE: 13/15
The wrapper had some spots but was otherwise near perfect. Minimal veins, perfect triple cap.

ASH:8/10
Mottled, flaky gray/black ash that held on for about an inch. Exploded when it hit the floor. Thank God for dustbusters.

DRAW: 10/10
The draw was effortless and open. No problems getting all the rich flavors out of this one!

BURN: 9/10
The cigar took a while to figure out it's path, but after that it was pretty straight. No touch ups and never went out.

SMOKE: 9/10
Lots of smoke, I could swear I could taste a little sweetness on the exhale.

FLAVOR: 18/20
I can say that this cigar really won me over with it's taste alone. Earthy and full of a starchy/sweet undertone while still being punchy enough to switch to water instead of my usual coffee in the morning. ( I keep my cigars at 60% or lower to make the ligero a little dryer than most of you guys) The starch was really present towards the last half, along with a rich blast of nicotine.

UNIQUENESS:7/10
While I thoroughly enjoyed this cigar, it is not a top contender for being a unique cigar. It is very balanced and has a kick ass blend, it is only in the upper 70% of the cigars that I have smoked.

FINISH: 14/15
The finish was exactly how it should be. Mellow aftertaste while being there as long as you expect it to be. I really enjoy the earth/starchy taste on the tongue. The ligero has adds a slight bite to the lips that doesn't last too long, but a nice compliment.

Solid 88

Cigar #6

Appearance (12/15): The final cigar in this contest was a rather homely, light brown lonsdale. The wrapper was sturdy but rough, covered with small dark lines. The lighter portions of the wrapper had a very faint greenish hue. The cigar was firmly constructed, with no soft spots or obvious plugs.

The cold tobacco had the sweet aroma of fresh flowers and honey.

Ash (9/10): The ash was medium to dark gray in color, and sturdy in its composition.

Draw (9/10): The draw was slightly tight initially, but not a problem.

Burn (7/10): The burn during the first inch or so was terrible. The cigar lit evenly, and then began to canoe badly. I evened out the burn with some aggressive touch-ups, and the burn was decent after that.

Smoke (10/10): Lots of pleasant smelling smoke.

Flavor/Blend (18/20): The cigar started out with a floral taste, but became harsh as I fought the uneven burn. When the cigar was burning evenly again, the harshness disappeared and was replaced by a smooth, faintly-sweet vanilla flavor. About two inches in, there were notes of aromatic wood. (I always identify this taste as cedar, but that may be because cedar is the first wood I think of in relation to cigars.) At this point, the taste was becoming medium-bodied and very enjoyable. I can't describe the specific tastes very well, but it was bright and lively, sort of like citrus. The flavor remained consistent through the final third.

Uniqueness (8/10): This is difficult category to score. There was nothing revolutionary about the individual flavors, but the overall blend was unique.

Finish (15/15): This cigar stayed pleasant until the end, and left only a faint, agreeable aftertaste.

Total: 88/100

It's been a little crazy and I haven't even smoked this cigar yet. My wife comes home from the hospital tomorrow so I probably won't make the deadline.

okay guys here we go.... The final cigar in our contest is none other than the Punch Super Selection #1 from the 02 vintage

I’ve had the opportunity to smoke about five or six of these cigars recently, and it has quickly become one of my absolute favorites. However, that being said I think I finally pulled the dud out of the box, because this particular cigar let me down a little bit. It was beautiful on the outside with a shiny smooth bandless natural wrapper with a relaxing pre-light aroma. The ash was grey and moderately flakey due to burn issues I had on one side of the cigar throughout the smoke. The draw was perfect, but as already mentioned the constant re-lighting of one side of the cigar became quite annoying, and at one point the cigar was canoed in completely and I had to re-light all of the edges. It had an enjoyable medium bodied profile that was different from the normal dry tannic flavor I usually get in this cigar. It was more of a leathery core with almost seemed like a lime-peel tanginess to it. It was fairly one dimensional, and occasionally I tasted bits of ammoniac harshness. I kept thinking the cigar was going to turn around until I was finally at the nub and I realized that it wasn’t nearly as good as the last few I’ve had. The smoke was nice and thick throughout except the one time it went out on its canoeing excursion. Oh well, it happens in every box, and to let one smoke ruin the bunch for you would be ridiculous, so these will stay atop my regular smoke list as long as the price continues to be affordable.

Well it's not the cigar I thought it was, but at least I had the country of origin correct. :jitb:

I thought it was a wonderful cigar, the second-best of the entire contest (I thought #1 was just a tad bit better). So it's got 5 or 6 years on it now, eh? MAN this is gonna be an outstanding smoke in another 8 or 10.

Thanks for hosting the contest, Benzo! I had a blast participating in it. Whenever you do the next one, count me it.
