  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I see that 1792 flake is offered in bulk, 50g tins, and a 250g size. How is the 250g packaged? Is it just one big sealed metal tin? Or something different?

the larger are packaged in bricks of flake, sealed in a heavy duty plastic, then cardboard box. not as dense as the esoterica mylar bags, but dense.

there will be some guys who say the bag can be cellared, and it may. for me (FVF, three boxes, hella sale!), i broke mine into jars. truth be told, it was less about not trusting the packaging, and more about having to open less at a time later. open one small jar when i get to it, the rest are still sealed and dated.

Though I prefer to keep a sealed tin sealed until I am ready to smoke it, there are many who say that although aging proceeds differently from an intermittently opened container than one that has not been opened, it is no better. This discussion devolves into whether continuous aerobic aging -> is any better than aerobic aging that becomes anaerobic on depletion of the air. To me an uninterrupted chemical process that continues to produce sought after aging benefits is better than the opposite. Why interrupt what is working? Why force aging to proceed in one manner and then open the jar and force it into another? Most would reply that they open aging jars to smoke the tobacco. But anyone who has been smoking the pipe for a few years more than likely has a good deal of tobacco on hand. I would reply smoke something else!

But this is just my opinion. The truth is that it's done both ways, and those that open jars don't feel the need to change their ways.
