  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Current update. Old finish (wax) removed, stem cleaned up, rim cleared of charring.

The rim was tough - because it is sandblasted and not flat, I could not use a topping board. I had to keep wetting it and brushing it with the nylon brush until all the chart was removed.

Now I just need to polish the silver band and apply the wax to the stem and bowl, then buff it to a shine

What did you use on the silver Rob? I've got a few in the resto pile that will need the bands cleaned up. Nice work man!
Curious to hear what you used too, Rob. I usually use toothpaste and if it still needs some polish I step it up to Simichrome which I also use on the shiny bits of my motorcycles.

I used the Weiman Royal Sterling Polish.

It can wreck the finish of the pipe, so I carefully placed painter's masking tape on the pipe to protect it, then used very small amounts on a paper towel (literally a drop at a time) and slowly polished it. Took four or five times to get the shine I really wanted but it cleaned it up beautifully.

Then, I wrapped the silver band in masking tape so that I could apply the paragon wax to the pipe and buff it. Usually I attach the stem to the shank before buffing but, this time, I left them separate and the band taped so that the polished surface wouldn't get messed up.

What kind of nylon brush for the top Rob?
Pipe cleaners with nylon bristles. It was pretty tedious but I had time. I'd dip the pipe cleaner into the alcohol and then concentrate on one small area of the rim. I think that, next time, I might try a toothbrush - stiff enough bristles to clean but soft enough to ensure I won't scratch the wood.
