  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Nevermind google I need some ol back in the day hippies who can answer a few questions. Im A big doors fan, my father turned me onto rock & roll at a young age. I was already into hip hop but he said he wanted me to broaden my listening experience. Im glad he did because now my ipod is filled with the stones, guns & roses, tupac, sting, Biggie, bolton, Janis, Jay-z, James taylor, fugees, elton & the beatles just to name a few. My question is - Do you think it's a curse, imitation, premeditation or other explaining why some rockers come and go by way of overdose? I know they say the good die young but it seems as though it happens pretty often. I was reading up a little on Jim, it was said he died of an over dose of heroine he sniffed thinking it was cocaine? Any truth to this I know some of you FOG's can speak from a little experience. Thanks

As I recall Morrison died of a heart attack- no doubt hastened by drug & alcohol abuse. When The Doors & Jefferson Airplane toured Europe together in 1968, Grace Slick said people were always giving them drugs. Grace would save hers for whenever. Morrison would take what he was given immediately. Oddly, beside drugs, both Morrison & Slick were REALLY into alcohol. I saw The Doors at The Spectrum in 1970. That show & others is available on CD.

See I didn't know that, your right drugs & alcohol can cause premature heart failure. I was a little intrigued, to know certain things about artist. When you become fond of there music you want to see where they get there inspiration. I think it makes you appreciate it more. It just seemed like a trend/curse where you have singers/rockstars dying in plane wrecks, drug & alcohol overdoses or being killed or stalked by some crazed fan. Would you say a lack of knowledge contributed to it, and what has changed today since you don't hear to much of it now a days? Thanks

When you become a big star, you become the property of whatever media organization you've penned your name to. This means promotion after promotion after promotion. Wake up at 6am, do a morning radio show, a few call ins to other radio shows, maybe an afternoon promotion, and then you're on stage at night. You get little time to yourself, and you're constantly trying to meet the demands of other people. You start taking uppers to give yourself that extra kick you need, and downers to help you relax.

This is why the biggest stars nowadays form their own record labels after they hit it big with their own albums: so they can control their time better. The internet may even help others out a bit since you can have direct access to your fans without having to kiss the ass of every minor radio celebrity in whatever city you're in.

And some people have self destructive personalities. And some people are lucky. Jorma Kaukonen, guitarist for Jefferson Airplane & Hot Tuna, did tons of hard drugs & alcohol. Now sober 10-12 years & about to turn 70, he still does over 100 shows a year AND runs a guitar camp in the spring & summer.

I'm sure some people also have a stronger constitution. I can't believe Keith Richards isn't dead yet. Or is he just pickled?

This isn't exactly a new phenomenon the Beatles formed Apple records in 1968 for more creative control of their music. Just one example that jumps off the top of my head.

I see what you mean, when you put it like that. Even when you catch one of those behind the music shows you don't see these type of pressures. Every once and a while you'll see a couple stressful situations but nothing extreme.
I can definitely see how this can get out of control.

Human nature is insatiable. Everybody seeks their happiness, but unfortunately, many don't know where to find it. They sought it in the form of physical pleasure. That never satisfies long, and because of their money, lifestyle and associations, excess is often the result. Plus, they are artists, which generally puts them dead center among those that live a lifestyle contrary to common conception and believe they are enlightened, not just the stupid extreme liberals that they are!

many of the 60's stars were so self indulgent and didn't have the management around them to control their excesses. they were not as interested, at least in morrison's case, in the business end of things. times are a lot different now for the majority of artists.
but look at someone like steven adler who got kicked out of gnr for his excessive drug abuse. he's still alive now, but a shadow of his former self. slash on the other hand, clean and still making music and money.
it's always been a curiousity of mine to wonder what morrison, hendrix etc might have accomplished had they been able to stay away from their vices.

Read Nikki Sixx's The Heroin Diaries for a first hand look at the year in the life of a junkie and rock star. I'm sure it'll answer a lot of the questions you have. I started reading and did not put it down until I finished it. It's one of the few books that realy shocked me...not because of what he did, but it made me wonder how the hell he survived all of it.

When you're a star, people just throw stuff at you...fans, friends, dealers, record company people, promoters, etc. The sad part is that it's part artist, part record company, part fans. The artist does it to escape what their life has become, the record company and promoters do it to keep you on the road making money for them and fans feed it because everyone loves a train wreck.

What's sad is that you have stars today that are in and out of rehab and people worship them because of it. It's almost as if you're not a star until you've had a drug problem, breakdown or done time. Look at people like Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Brittney Spears, Pete Dougherty, Michael Jackson, etc. The fans and media then treat them like icons because "they survived their ordeal". The fact is that if one of their "people" would grow a set and tell them they need help instead of hiring a publicist to make it cool, many of them wouldn't have had to go through what they did.

Im going to get this book. Thanks, I've been a music junkie since I was a kid. Matter fact thats part of my smoking experience these days. Get my stick and my music nothing like it, as you know musicians connect with there fans through there music....until now that was only way *facebook, twitter etc..etc* but when you really get into it and listen to the lyrics some of them sound as if they had to be high in order to come up with some of this stuff. Then again despite that it is some damn good music!
