Shipping smokes

So today I mailed out a few empty boxes, and I stuck a smoke in one of them for the recipient to try out. I went to the local post office and the woman behind the counter ask me the standard, "Anything fragile, flamable, perishable, or potentially hazardous?". To which I replied jokingly, "Just a Cigar". The woman proceeded to look at me like a criminal and call over her manager and told me I couldn't ship cigars. So I ask why not and she said "you can't ship any tobacco products, something about taxes across state lines, or the chance a minor may recieve them". She pulls out some no-no shipping chart but can't find what she is looking for, I didn't want to cause a fuss so I went to an alternative shipping provider and kept my mouth shut.

So my questions are 1) Is this woman correct? 2) How do most of you ship(which shipping provider/method)?

I don't know if she is correct or not, if she is correct I have never shipped a cigar, just bubble wrap in boxes.
I always use USPS with delivery confirmation.

OMG, not sure if she is actually correct or not, I did a search on USPS.com and it yielded nothing to help. I've shipped...God, I've no idea how many cigars I've shipped USPS and my local PO absolutely knows what's in the boxes. I can't imagine that it's against the rules but either way, a simple "no" answer to their question will solve your problem.

I looked for a related thread(but not too deep), the golf forum I am in frowns heavily on you if you post anything remotely related to another thread, so it's an old(but good) habit to do so first.

Well, yer not allowed to ship any kind of tobbacco, regardless of the origin, from Mexico to the U.S. (found out at the last minute).

what they dont know cant hurt them.. thats why i question some people putting insurance on some boxes they ship.. not sure you can file a claim on a damaged cigar that shouldnt even have been shipped in the first place.

I have been turned away at the UPS Store once they found out there were ciogars in the box. I just wrap them up nicely and say there are baseball cards inside.

wow i dont know why you guys have problems, i usually pack up my cigars at the post office infront of the girls behind the counter. Then again i have become very friendly with them over the past few months because i am in there all the time........

I guess everyones post office is different = (

doesnt NHC, CI, Famous, the Devil Site etc..... ship using USPS???

Never had a problem. Shipped UPS, Fedex and USPS. Never ever declared what was in there.

I just checked off gift, had to list the contents, to and from info and sign it. I asked the woman at post office, she looked it up to be sure and said no problem shipping cigars. Plus in the past when asked the usual questions I said no just cigars and never had a problem.[/FONT]
