  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Ok so if cigar beetles eggs are already on baccy leaves and they hatch after the cigars are rolled etc etc we all know about them. Why do i never here anyone talk about beetles in their pipe baccy?

Yea i know sometimes i think about crap too much.

They are cigar snobs :)

actually I would assume pipe tobacco can get beetles as well, but since the pipe baccy I have is usually shredded and pressed together (don't know if that is the official description, but you know what I mean) my guess is that there is less of a chance for them to make it into the finished product. Also, since pipe tobacco is more often stored in jars or tins, when the beetles do appear they are pretty contained and don't risk ruining a large portion of your stash

Was wondering about that. Im a flake fiend so thought that maybe something in the process killed them off. The baccy is contained well so no worries about it spreading i guess.

Yep, pretty sure pipe tobacco is much more processed than cigars. They are probably well taken care of in most pipe tobacco.

i think those suckers could survive a surprising amount of time without oxygen, truth be told. i think it has more to do with the processing. pipe tobacco is processed much more than cigar tobacco, and even the untopped selections are still usually cased in some way. if that process is harsh enough to destroy tobacco beetle eggs, no bugs. could also be why mold is more of an issue with pipe than cigar.

mind you this is conjecture. hopefully educated conjecture, but still...

I've stumbled across an article about this before and I can't seem to find it now but it does have to do with the way the tobacco is processed. Especially in the case of Perique and Latakia, that is put under heat and pressure or smoked as part of the curing process.

you are right, i have not heard of a pipe tobacco that is not pressed. Pressing causes heat, and sometimes it is also heated up externally maybe that kills them off, or the pressure could kill them too.
