Them are dangerous. We had an option in my freshman year of high school drafting of either building a trebuchet or a spud gun. We chose trebuchet.

We used to make the soup can cannons and shoot tennis balls for fun... but this would just me a more modified version. This one doesn't shoot spuds... so why call it a spud gun?
