Starting on pipe.

Well, I've always thought a pipe would be an interesting affectation and so far it has. Now, I do enjoy the pipe smoking. I can sit down and read a book, not have to worry about the ash or anything and be content. Well, unfortunately the pipe tobacco I have is not very good quality in my opinion. I think it is very young as far as aging goes.

When I smoke cigars all the tobacco is aged at least 15 years before I get to the cigar so my question to you fellows is, where can I find fine tobacco for the pipe?

Or, if any of you know where I can find some documentation on making my own pipe tobacco that would be most excellent as well.

IMO, comparing pipe tobacco and cigars is an apple + oranges thing. Most decent cigars can benefit from aging, but with pipe tobacco - unless it contains a significant portion of Virginia leaf, you will probably not notice a huge difference between a new sample and one that's several years old.

What tobacco blends do you currently consider "not very good quality"?

Also, as far as "making your own pipe tobacco" ... does this mean growing it as well? Or do you just want to make your own blends from different component tobaccos?

Yeah the youngest cigar he sells is 8 years aged, and the aging then goes to 15, 20, and 30 years aged tobacco. The prices go from $4.50 a stick to $25.00 a stick. I normally stay with the $10 range. He will blend a cigar to your specifications if you order at least 10. He can also make the cigars with various types of alcohols if you want, he doesn't have any that are made beforehand with the alcohol in it.

I'm just talking about blending. I think I can weedle some scrap tobacco out of my friend at Habanos Torres, I just want some information.

Well, the shop I bought the pipe from has a proprietary blend that's Cavendish and vanilla... the flavor is all right but I get a sore throat whenever I smoke it.

I tried a couple of his fresh smokes, and found them to start nicely, but get dull as they smoked. He uses aged tobacco, but in my opinion, the smokes need some time to rest and let the flavors blend together to really come out and get really good. Don't get me wrong, they weren't bad, just need some time to themselves. In order to test this theory, I bought a bunch of them, labeled them with the date I got them and dropped them in the bottom box to rest a while. The first one is due up in a month, then every 3 months after that for a while. I'll let you know what I think then.

I bought a little of everything, several ages of tobacco to get a good idea...most don't have bands, with identifying marks and he wasn't in the shop so I talked to his wife that day. I'll see how they progress and give a fair evaluation. As I said, not bad, just not impressive right away.

Of the three humidors did you buy mainly from the rolling room, the white humidor's left cabinet, or the right?

Thats why I put all my Pinar's down. Very old beautiful tobacco but as a cigar they just haven't had time to blend into something great. Time will tell.

Call them and Gail will send description of all blends they have. Christmas cookie, berry Cobbler, Boswells best Dans Blend are all good. Spice-N-Nice is great with a GOOD cup of coffee. All thereAromatics are good. Todd likes their North woods blend for an English, quite spicy. A lot of Latakia.:thumbsup:
