  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

So I haven't been fishing in years. I want to get back into it but don't know a thing about the tackle that is out there now.
I'm looking to do some lake fishing by me (bass, pike, etc).
Can anyone reccomend a good pole and reel, not crazy on the wallet.

First of all, it's a 'Rod', not a pole....If you don't want to spent too much money, go to basspro.com and get yourself a nice combo.

If you want a real nice rod, check this out. Get the 6 and 1/2 foot model.

Here's a nice reel. Go for the 8lb model.

If you are looking for a nice quality setup but do not won't the price of the Shimano's or Pflueger's, I would check out Bass Pro Shops line of rods and reels. I have several of their Bass Pro Extreme XPS rods setup with Bass pro reels and have been extremely happy with them. If I remember right, I think the most I have in one setup is somewhere around $125. But have others that I have spent less on. My dad and brother have some of the Shimano and Pflueger setups and some of the same Bass Pro setups that I do and most of the time guess what they reach for first?

I'm not saying that you can't get carried away even with the Bass Pro lines but you can get some good equipment for half the cost as some of the other stuff out there.

I can't wait till I'm able to head out to the bay this year. I've been missing it. I don't think I can help too much in this area since I've been using the same rod for a while, but as for reels you should really by a nice one. You also should go somewhere to see how it feels and that you like it. There are some many options now days I think it would be hard to pick on on the internet w/o seeing it first.

Coming from someone who used to fish tournaments like a madman, just for a starter kit, don't mess around with Bass Pro. Go to Walmart and just get a combo reel...it will suit you just fine..and you won't beat the price.

I agree with AZSteelman. I used to fish tourneys all the time and it doesn't really matter the equipment when you're starting out.

Good example: I was teach my 2 yr old to fish this weekend and caught a 4lb. largemouth on a Princess rod and reel from Walmart. I gotta say it was a helluva lot more fun catching it on that little reel too!

There's nothing like catching a bass or pike on a fly you've tied yourself. Deer hair poppers are easy to tie and you can pick up a cheap 8wt combo for next to nothing. Makes things a little more interesting.

I just started back into fishing last year. I have a cheap micro combo I bought at wal mart and it is more fun fishing with that thing than any of my others. A small bass or crappie feels like a whale on that thing!

When I was ten yrs old, I caught 9 fish in 30 min using a bent / sharpened paper clip attached to some bailing twine ... using Kraft American cheese for bait. It's been downhill ever since.

I dunno how big the pike and bass are that you're catching, but anything under about 10 pounds is a blast to catch with a Shakespeare Microspin (under $20 at Wal-Mart). I have 2 microspins and one Pflueger ultralight (which is almost identical to the microspins, but nicer. I use the three almost exclusively (have a lot of rods, but these are so much fun). Caught everything from 3" bluegills to 12-pound catfish, and those rods never have any problems.

All good suggestions. I like the bass pro shops. THen again I like Orvis for flyfishing equip. My son is now using my first Orvis rod and reel as will his son. I like quality.
