  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Hey guys,

So I can't smoke inside. When I'm done smoking my pipe, I run a couple pipe cleaners through the stem and put the pipe on the counter top. I'm in a small apartment and within an hour my place smells like an ashtray. Wife isnt too happy with it.

Can I store the pipe in a baggie or something, would that ruin the "rest" that it needs to go through?

What do you guys do that live in small spaces besides leaving your pipe outside (something I do NOT want to do)?

Thanks!

Yea I think I may have to try that!

So the ziploc bag is a bad idea? I have those on hand, unused tupperware is something I'll need to go out and purchase.

Thanks!

My 6 that I have don't smell. The baccy that I have stored in my room gives off a nice smell. But my clothes on the other hand. Febreze every nook and cranny of them. It does help.

I'm going out on a limb, but, years ago I smoked a lot of aromatics, I didn't like them but didn't know any better. My house also stunk bad from my pipe laying in the house. The past several years I have found out how much I like the non-aromatics, and for some reason these do not make my pipe smell as bad. I have around 30+ pipes and a wooden cabinet that they lay in with the door open for air and you have to get right up to the door before you can smell a cold pipe. Is it possible that the sweet stuff they put on aro's is what makes them so stinky. Even in my shop, when I smoked the aro, the next day my shop smelled really bad, but with the latakia, virginia, english blends, I can go back out 2 hours later and no smell...

Mine hang on a rack in my basement. I don't notice any stink and the wife has never complained but I smoke down there too.

Get a small Tupperware container and put a bowl of activated charcoal in it. You can store your pipes in there and the charcoal will dramatically reduce the odor
I still think this is the best solution. The charcoal will not only absorb the scent, but moisture as well.

Yup. And Tupperware is relatively cheap.
Make it a big enough container and you'll have more available air space and you could also have room to add a tub of DRY kitty litter to do just the opposite of how we use it for cigars.
I keep mine in a big upright storage cabinet, but like @Griz said, I don't have too much of a smell problem. It is noticeable enough, though, and I've considered throwing a dish of baking soda in there as a courtesy to my wife, but she hasn't complained. Although nowhere near airtight, maybe just the closed doors are enough containment?
I find smoked pipe tobacco smell WAY different than smoked cigar tobacco smell, though. Cigar is like old ashtray, my pipes (and car) end up more cloyingly sweet, which I find very pleasant. I think it might be from my fondness for VA.

I'm fortunate in that I have a basement to keep my stuff, so it's not an issue. But, when I have a pipe that has a pretty strong aroma, I do keep a plastic shoe box with a bowl of charcoal for that reason. 24 hours later and the smell is virtually gone.

Since my pipes are all out in the open on a pegboard rack, I would notice if a few of them started to smell

I have all mine in a cabinet and have never had an issue, I even went and gave it a good sniff...... Smells faintly if pipe smoke but nothing I would describe as unpleasant

Maybe consider a little deeper cleaning with some pipe sweetner/ever clear it may be getting funky in the stem

I use ever clear to clean my pipes.
I met my wife in 1969. I rode motorcycles, smoked pipes and cigars.
She is basically ok and knows where the door is.
Ever clear is 150 proof booze it will clean your pipes. If your young ya might sample it.

Funny post!

Do you just pour it into the mouthpiece and let it go into the bowl?? And I'm already too old for Everclear!
