  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

    Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I am a novice to the Tatuaje cigars. I am looking to order a Box but thought I would ask a couple of questions first.

I generally smoke a full bodied cigar, some of my favorites are Trinidad, Cohiba, Cuabas, etc.

How do the Tats compare to a full bodied cuban? How are they for aging?

Thanks ahead.

Pete Johnson modeled his cigars to mimic his favorite Cubans. His brown label is fuller than the red label, I'd suggest starting there. Check a few websites out, one being tatuajecigars.com and newhavancigars.com. You could get a killer sampler from New Havana to taste your way through the Tat offerings. They are a great retailer. Welcome aboard and it's good to see another Tat fan in the making. As to aging, I don't know. Mine get smoked too quickly!

I think that the earlier blends were better for aging, but have not had anyhting new from Tatuaje in about a year or so. If the tobacco is anything like the first year or two then they should be a killer smoke.

You can't go wrong with the browns or the reds. I personally don't think any NC can mimic a CC. With that said there are many sticks I would prefer to smoke over CC...ie Tats. Tats are stronger with a beautiful spice that you would find in other sticks (besides DPG)...not overly complex...but just shear awesomeness (is that a word). It's like comparing a filet mignon to a prime rib...sure there both hunks of meat but taste totally different and are both yummy. You are not going to get that cuban taste out of a non-cuban but if you want a stronger smoke go with the Tat. :ccool:

Tats don't taste like CCs. They are full bodied and generally very peppery. Aging smooths them out a bit (I've gone as far as 3 years), but they still pack a punch. But let us know what you think after you try a few!

I don't find any cubans to be very full bodied.

I've had Tat's with up to 3 years on some and had the same experience as Zen Cigar Man - smooths them out but they still kick! There really wasn't a huge change in profile after the first few months of settling. Any of the sticks with the broadleaf maduro wrapper in particular need/benefit from a rest (even short): after 6 months, El Triunfadors grow fur...

Anyway... I would be very happy smoking nothing but cc's (Boli's & Trini's are my favs) and Tat's for the rest of my days. I spend more on PJ's products than any other cigars, by far.

I think they somewhat are simliar to the few CC's I've had; peppery and bold. Most of the time, I prefer a Tat to a CC, and often find myself looking for the same characteristics in each.

La Riqueza robusto has a similar profile to the RyJ Short Churchill;
Tat (red) Hermosos is similar to a PLPC;
The Tat Brown line is very similar to Bolivar/Monte....

I don't think full bodied is a good way to describe most Cubans...IMO full flavored is a better description. In my experience, the Cuban cigar has a more complete flavor profile. By that I mean, the flavors of the cigar have a certain level of complexity that creates a very thorough level of satisfaction when smoking it.

Many times, when smoking NCs I feel like they have so much more potential that they could be living up to. With just about all of the more recent brands utilizing full bodied Nicaraguan tobacco, Pete's brands in particular, there seems to be a certain level of fullness that other NCs don't quite achieve and these Nicaraguan are just about as close to the experience of smoking a Cuban as NC cigars get while still being completely different...if that makes sense.

Try them out. Ye'll see. :thumbsup:

But to answer, I simply find them different. Both are good, but each in its own fashion.

This makes sense to me and is a pretty good description of my limited experience.

I have smoked very few CCs, but all of those have had a similar flavor profile--what I'd call "grassy" in general, with other flavors coming and going (pepper, cocoa, coffee, etc depending on the stick). I have found the Tat Browns that I've smoked (I've only had 2 vitolas, actually) to follow this flavor profile, as well as some other NCs (the RP Olde World Reserve being one). If you handed me a Tat Reserva SW or Noella and told me it was in fact a Cuban I'm pretty sure I couldn't tell the difference.

Now I'm sure that there are many other flavor profiles among CCs, but I've just happened to get mostly the "grassy" ones. The exception being the Bolivar RC which was unique (the only thing I could compare it too was a Perdomo ESV) and the Monte #4 which was a pepper bomb (though mine was probably pretty green).

Thanks,

Maybe I should not have said Full bodied and Cuban- full flavor, Trinidad's are my favorite and they are not the powerhouse at all but great smokes and I have aged them for as long as three years.

I will give them a try and let you know what I think.
