That is part of the rules to be sure there is no cheating. Everybody gets their things searched on the way in and a lie detector the for the big prizes. In order to get the better spots(If there is such a thing) you need to be on the ice by 9:00 and the contest starts at 12:00 so there is a few hours to kill. Bring lots of snacks, schnapps and a few beers. Put my line down at 12 and could see the wife was having trouble. Helped her get her line down and noticed my rod was bouncing. Missed that fish and never had another bite. That was my first bite in 3 years at the contest. Maybe next year

Trust me its nor free. If you buy your ticket in November it $35.00 If you buy it in January its $50.00. All it gets you is into the contest. There is also raffle tickets and they are $10.00. I buy 4 every year and have never won a thing. Top prize for the raffle is a Ice Castle wheel house.
