  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I have been talking to people at the local B&M's and a lot of people are telling me that a lot of Cubans are not as good as they once were and that quality control has slipped over the years etc, I am still new so I can't give a personal opinion but I was wondering what you guys think and if they are not the top of the line anymore who do you think are making the new quality cigars. In other works who compares to the Cuban cigars of old?

I like cubans but I can't get them because they are illegal here in the U.S. but when I'm in other parts of the world they are phenominal. Recent production is very good I've not had many bad ones at least no more than bad cigars that I can get right here in the U.S. But seriously just smoke what you like no matter what someone says about production if you like it and it pleases your palete then smoke it!

One thing to remember, the guys that work at your B and M are trying to make sure you buy THEIR cigars, not cuban cigars! I'm not saying they are doing anything illegal, but that they want you to buy what they sell. I will say this. Recent production smokes are DIFFERENT. Whether they are better or not is up to the individual. So as terran said, Smoke what you like and like what you smoke.

Cuban cigars, like most things in the world, have evolved and changed over time--for a variety of reasons. They have had up periods and down periods. Most people, however, would agree that Cuban cigars aren't quite as good as they once were, but by no means does that mean they're bad.

CURRENTLY, like over the past 5 years or so, they've been in what a lot of people consider an up period. There are some really, really good things coming out of their right now...and when they're "on" there's nothing out there that really quite compares.

However, having said that, I do NOT intend to say that they are better than all other cigars. They are "unique" and they certainly can be better, but just because a cigar is from Cuba doesn't mean it's the end-all-and-be-all of cigars.

To be honest, I'm really, really enjoying today's Nicaraguan cigars as much as most Cubans.

But then, you know...every now and then I smoke a Cuban that just blows my fucking doors off. :pokemyeye

As for comparables to cubans, try Tatuaje brown labels and the black labels if you can find em. Pete Johnson, the creator, openly admits that he's not tryin to make better cigars than cubans, but he's just trying to immitate them the best, or something like that.

at anyh rate, he makes some really great stuff that holds up to any cuban cigars i may or may not have had the pleasure of smoking

As already stated, Cuban cigars have been changing their flavour, something some people like, while others dislike. Whatever motive there is for this change, it has happened and nothing can be done. Some people talk (the brand I've heard the most this rant about) on the "original" Partagas flavour, and I wonder: How the bloody hell could they try a first batch? They are reffering to a flavour of before, yet quite possibly not the "original" flavour profile. Besides, there are several recent productions that are unbelievably good, and others that aging has done wonders to.

The petite edmundos, secretos & coloniales are all real good right out of the box....
(That's what I hear.) Each one is distinct, flavorful and nothing else truly compares.

I, however don't know how they compare to some of the 'old ones'...

For NC - how can you argue with the quality of Pete, Pepin, Padron, Fuente, Lito, Dion, etc, etc...?

So many really fantastic options for the cigar enthusiast!!!!

NC or CC - I do 'buy-in' to the current golden-age of cigars theory!

I think you will find a different opinion from everyone on this one. I have been smoking cubans for 20 years, and have probably 2000 in my humidor, maybe more. There was a time in the explosion years of the 90's were quality control sucked in Havana. However, it is my opinion that Cuba has done a great job of improving their quality over the past 5-7 years. Many cigars like the Monte 2, are back to the way they used to be in the heyday.

The massive limitado's and regionals are mostly top notch. The difference I find is that non-cubans have improved exponentially in the past 10 years. Many of them are equally as good as any cuban cigar. LIke the Tatjuae, Hemingway and so many other cigars.
