  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I've got one of those surge protectors that pays $10K if my computer equipment is damaged by a surge ... so I definately keep everything ON!

Luckily in California, thunderstorms are not really an issue. We get some rain, and some lightning, but nothing on par with what I used to see when I was a child living in New Mexico.

A summer storm would roll in, and it looked like wall of white moving across the valley, with huge streaks of lightning tearing through it. In a half hour, there would be almost 50 close lightning strikes, and the thunder was incredible.

But after that half hour, the storm was over, and everything went back to normal.

I miss those storms, there is nothing like natures fury to make you realize how insignificant you really are.......

We have so many squall lines out here in Indiana that it's a pain in the ass to turn it all off.

Power blinks off & on so much that I've given up resetting the microwave clock.

Being a HAM Radio Person, I have most my Radios and Computers ON. I am also involved with Skywarn, so when Everyone is thinking the BIG ONE is here I'm looking for it. NOPE I have the Antennas all connected and Power on. I do have a GOOD back-up and UPS's also though...

Thunderstorms are pretty damn rare in the Anchorage area but we live close to the valley, so the occasional bumper sneaks in. We don't bother to turn anything off, though. We have a suppressor on the house, along with an UPS on the PC.

Nah....not with the suppresor on it, at least.

It's not like we installed it, anyway. When we bought our house, it was outfitted with a whole-house surge supressor and generator hookup/switch.

Thunderstorms are almost unheard of in this area, but I've got surge protectors on anything of value mostly because of the shoddy wiring in this building

Be sure that you unplug your computer and valuable electronics during an electrical storm. Surge protectors protect against just that, voltage surges. They do not protect against lightning, which generates WAAAAAAY too much voltage for your surge protector to even begin to handle.

Believe me, we see homeowner's claims all the time with surge protectors and their attached electrical components fried from lightning.
