  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Okay, so I have always been a tin guy and I love me some McClelland. Bulk has always been something I wanted to get into but the gimmicky names the shop gives the baccy and the lower price tags always worried me. I never knew what I was really getting into when I grabbed out of the bulk jars at the shop.

So this is my question for some of my bulk tobacco pipe lovers. What are some good bulk baccys that are quality and good for cellaring? I want to order some bulk but I don't know where to start besides the obvious that I already have covered. Which is; Penzance, Mississippi River and Plum Pudding.

there are a lot of shops that will buy bulks from standard people, lane ltd being the most prevelant and old school, and just rename them. or, they will have their own combinations of two or three standard bulks. actual shop blending is kinda rare, from what i can tell. not that that is an issue, really, as long as the pricing is reasonable. hell, a lot of them will tell you "yeah, this is 1Q", or whatever, if you ask nicely.

more to the point, what do you like out of your blends, and what are your preferences, rex? they all good, but are you looking for a Va or VaPer, a smokey balkan, burley, or what?

I love almost all McClelland but my favorite is No. 27 which includes red and orange Virginia I believe. I also like the stove aged stuff like Dark Star. Other than that I am just looking for good ideas for bulk.

Is tin tobacco generally better tobacco or is it just bulk has so many different grades of tobacco you have to sort through them to find some good ones?

I'm a tin guy myself, I just like the way they look, I guess. Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake is one of the few that I buy in bulk, because it's only sold in bulk. It's very similar to Escudo Navy De Luxe but it has a bit of black Cavendish in it to add a bit of sweetness.

Now that I am back into pipes after a 30 year hiatus ( TMJ issues ) I used to have a few shops that you could buy tobacco by the ounce which is/was great because I could test taste anything that I thought would be good. Once it was smoked if it was something I really enjoyed then I'd buy about 8 ounces of it...put it away in a sealed jar and just labeled it. After a year I quickly had about 20 jars so just like cigars...it can get you going downhill quickly and I love the smell of pipe tobacco and so does my wife which lets me smoke in these cold winters.
