  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

tips on my technique needed

Lately I've been noticing that the tobacco in my pipe burns only in the center of the bowl. At least while the burn is still near the top of the bowl. I suppose that this is because I'm smoking too fast. However, I need to smoke this fast because otherwise, the burn goes out.

Also, I get agreeable flavors out of the smoke only while the tobacco is burning bright red. I find that if it goes down, the flavor gets much more bitter.

Can you tell me what am I doing wrong?

when I light, I always light the outer edge first and spiral the flame inward. Also, you should not need to smoke fast to keep lit. There may be a possible packing error there. either way, it is all trial and error my friend. Tobaccos also have different personalities in how they like to be packed and smoked. One of the reasons why I love pipe smoking...always an experience

Try this. When i light the baccy sometimes swells in the bowl depending on what blend im smoking. What i do is i light, after it swells i tamp then i relight. Usually get a good burn after that. I pack in 3s. Bottom third to half, second third but little tighter pack, then fill and pack tighter. If that made any damn sense. I know people swear by the Frank Method but i need an extra thumb or something for that method.

It really depends on the baccy. The art of a tamper though is very import. I use my tamper to stoke it constantly. Also sometimes my baccy burns in the middle as well but when it gets near the bottom the in burned tobacco usually catches for me.
