  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

My local tobacconist, who has been a pipe guy for 30+ years, tells me there are 3 core types, all other blends are merely subcategories of the 3 main ones. I am not the expert, but he is. I'll trust his word.

I look at it like a chef would look at sauces. There can be hundreds or even thousands of different sauces, but they are nothing more than variations on what the French call "Mother Sauces" - I think tobacco blends follow the same principle.

1. Aromatic Blends (Commonly known as Cavendish blends)
These usually have a base layer of sweetness, with multiple flavor possibilities (cherry, vanilla, chocolate, etc)

2. English Blends
Blends that tend to have smokey, woody characteristics. Usually hotter burning

3. Oriental Blends
These are the blends that give you spice and complexity.

So, for him, a VAper blend is an English or an oriental?

Well, VaPer is Virginia and Perique. Virginia is a tobacco that tends to burn hot, but has a milder flavor (typically used in cigarettes). Perique is a tobacco that is fermented and pressed in oak whiskey barrels until it is almost rotten. Think of perique like hot sauce. It is used to add an extra element to a blend. Spicy and strong.

As for where to classify the VaPer among the main blends...? I don't really know. It might be a perfect 50/50 combo of English and Oriental. I could always ask his opinion next time I'm in the shop.

I was just curious and appreciate you weighing in.

Thank you.

I think it's been covered but the basics imho are

Va

Vaper

Burly

English, which depending on which definition you look at would include Balkan blends but I classify them as those with Latakia

And aromatics, which lakelands fall into though I think they belong in their own category as I find them distinctly different compared to American aromatics
