So they packed these big barrels with tobacco which they called hogsheads!
Why did they call it a hogshead?
'Cause of those folks across the pond me laddies, the Brits ! It was a unit of measure!
So these hogsheads were pulled by cows, horses, oxen or slaves from a port or a plantation to the tobacco factories...........the road along which these were pulled was called "tobacco road".
These 1,000 pound hogsheads made their own road 'cause they flattened anything in their path!
