Blend is the #1 factor the best I can tell... But any pipe tobacco will bite you in my experience if you smoke too fast...
One of my favorite tins is Mac B Virginia #1... which is pretty notorious for biting.... Probably 3 out of every 4 bowls I've smoked in the past 6 months has been #1....
Smoking #1 that much has made me focus quite a bit more than I have in the past on the speed that I smoke, how I pack and tamp the bowl, etc.. All in an attempt to keep the coal as cool as I can, reduce the bite (which is negligible these days), and get a good clean burn...
This has actually made my smoking experience improve substantially on those days that I reach for other blends... I've blown through the better part of a tin of eileens dream over the past few weeks and haven't been bitten by it once... and have noticed that i'm getting extremely defined flavors out of it by taking it super slow and keeping the bowl nice and cool...
