  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Blend is the #1 factor the best I can tell... But any pipe tobacco will bite you in my experience if you smoke too fast...

One of my favorite tins is Mac B Virginia #1... which is pretty notorious for biting.... Probably 3 out of every 4 bowls I've smoked in the past 6 months has been #1....

Smoking #1 that much has made me focus quite a bit more than I have in the past on the speed that I smoke, how I pack and tamp the bowl, etc.. All in an attempt to keep the coal as cool as I can, reduce the bite (which is negligible these days), and get a good clean burn...

This has actually made my smoking experience improve substantially on those days that I reach for other blends... I've blown through the better part of a tin of eileens dream over the past few weeks and haven't been bitten by it once... and have noticed that i'm getting extremely defined flavors out of it by taking it super slow and keeping the bowl nice and cool...

Just had this conversation with a pipe maker buddy of mine yesterday
Pipe maker buddy?

As in custom, one off pipes? :)

How's his work? And roughly what does he charge?

Ive got a couple of nice "production" pipes (a savinelli, a Viking, etc...)... But I really enjoy my little collection of customs, and have been adding to the pile quite a bit this year... I picked up a cool ebony pipe in Ethiopia a few months back (smokes GREAT btw!)... Grabbed a hand carved "peace pipe" when I was in Taos a few months back (it actually smokes really well... But is mostly a novelty item..)... And bought a custom briar from some guy in Gatlinburg last year as well...

Would love to find a couple more "unique" pipes this year to add to the collection if you think he does good work for a reasonable price...

If any of you guys are collectors... I'll be picking up a meerschaum or two when I get to Turkey this summer... High quality meers are about 1/4 the price there that they will cost you here in the states... (a couple of hundred bucks... As opposed to $700-several grand)

And I'll be passing back through Addis in March... Simple ebony pipes there are between $20-$30 IIRC...

I'd be happy to pick up something for you guys on either of those trips if that's something you're interested in...

(sorry for the hijack!)
