  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Just wondering if anyone else has got tongue bite almost straight away from a new tobacco as I just tried P.S luxury navy flake and had it from the first draw after lighting it properly. Didn't even smoke a quarter before I called it quits.

Yes! I did at first, but I think a lot of it was getting the pipe too hot. It takes a few weeks to get it down. I still have trouble with a Peterson P-Lip as I get mouth roof bite. The secret is to sip-sip and tamp lightly and every few minutes to keep the ember going. I was always trying to puff it back to smoking well and it gets too hot......Just my opinion....

Yes, it was that way for me also. I couldn't feel my tongue every now and then. It's all good now....

Burley bites worst. Some VAs bite more than others, especially when wet or made by MacBaren. Latakia is generally smooth, as is Black Cavendish.

I've heard that can happen mate. did you dry it for long? Next time place it on a napkin / paper towel and put it in the microwave for 10 seconds, let it cool (only take 2 mins) and then crumble gently. This dries the baccy really nicely and you'll be able to tell if it was too wet.

Yeah mate 1 - 2 hours for flakes in most cases. Some even 3, that's why I use the time machine! Who has that long to wait around. Lol you are right though I have heard that some PH's are incompatible in baccy and people. Never experienced it myself though.

Tongue bite tends to go along with the pipe you're using as well. Understanding underlying issues. . wet tobacco. ..inferior /cheap pipes. ..packed too tight....re lighting too often. ..all contribute to a harsh experience. Just because briar pipes are popular doesn't mean that they burn cooler...a quality pipe/brand is going to give you a better experience The size bowl helps as well....the pipes I use have a nice sized bowl that gives me about 40 minutes of great smoking. ...I twist the tobacco on the 2nd and 3rd pinch so that it burns evenly all the way down and tap it maybe 2 or 3 times at most and the rest....smoking heaven. A bit of "cake" don't hurt either.

Thanks for this Cigar43 I'm waiting on my Peterson 306 to turn up any day now and ill give your packing method a try as well as the drying of the the tobacco the way The Munt has advised.
Just seemed strange that it's just this one tobacco but then again I'm new to this so willing to learn

Well went through everything suggest to smoke the navy flake again. Nice fresh pipe dried the flake out pack the bowl. And made sure not to get it hot on light up. First puff things are looking good second puff and nope tongue bite.
Well I gave it a good go but obviously it's just not meant to be.
Know a brother that I should be meeting up with soon that will get some PS Navy flake lol

Jar it and wait. Try it later as I went through the same thing, and now I can smoke anything without the bite. Your tongue is going through a change and it may take time. I could put a pipe in my mouth a couple months ago and it would hurt without tobacco, just the stem...

A lot of great input in posts previous to me. I too get the tongue bite as well. But it's hit and miss. I puff too fast, packed too tight, baccy way too wet (since I don't have patience to sit around and wait). But don't let this hamper you from piping. Some baccy's I never had this issue. Over time though, my tongue is pretty much used to the bite now.
