So, looks like the days of returning home to find a box of cigars (or pipe tobacco, et al) waiting on your front porch are gone!

As of December 19th, UPS requires a signature for any/all tobacco deliveries.

From their website:

All Tobacco Product Shipments must be made using UPS Delivery Confirmation Adult Signature Required service, requiring the signature of an adult 21 years of age or older upon delivery.

Although I do get the intention behind the requirement, it does kinda suck if you can't receive your package at work.

Small Batch still uses USPS, and so far USPS does not require a signature...Is anyone aware of any other online retailers using USPS?

I get a lot of stuff that travels UPS to the main post office in New Orleans and then is delivered in the daily mail. Curious how that will be handled. Are they asking for an ID to check your age or is it a theft issue?

This is how most of my packages arrive as well. They travel via UPS and then USPS makes the final delivery to my mailbox.

I have only received 3 orders since December 19th and none of them required a signature.

I've had a lot of UPS orders sine the 19th no sigs required, for some reason during the holidays USPS required sigs on the out of the US stuff, but so far none required for UPS, including 2 today

Just got a delivery Wednesday and they just dropped it off on the front porch. This will definitely be a problem when they actually start requiring a signature because I work afternoon shift and they usually stop around 2 hours after I leave.

UPS probably defines that on the web site, but it's up to the shipper to select that option for each shipment. As I recall, adult signature is about $5 for each shipment. It gives UPS plausible deniability if the package is delivered to someone under 21.

That will increase shipping costs dramatically. USPS priority is faster and cheaper anyhow.

If they have to verify age I think eventually you will see more pickup at distribution center or post office requirements. Going back and forth to have an adult available to sign for it just adds costs and delays.

I think reasoning is because of age and having them "fall into the wrong hands" aka anyone under 21. I could also see a slight reasoning because of these "porch pirates" stealing packages right after UPS, USPS etc. drop off packages at our doorsteps. Most of my cigar deliveries have been via UPS then transferred to the USPS and I haven't had any issues, yet. Then again, I haven't made any cigar purchases from on-line retailers in quite a few months. If they charge us more now just for this "signature", then it's a BS money grab IMHO.

Change in jobs which led to a big pay cut and working a 2nd job trying to make up for the loss. Sadly, been like this for just shy of a year, but not giving up as my 2nd job has plenty of openings and interviews every few months. Just praying for the right time that they say “you’re hired.”

I bought some sticks online through famous and they shipped USPS. Now I don’t know if it’s cause I’m in sorry ass California but USPS did require a signature. Sucks! That was a first for me.

At least USPS can return the item to the post office where you can pick it up at your convenience, UPS doesn't have a distribution center in the area and the best he can do is "meet me somewhere" to get the signature. I am expecting an order Wednesday by SurePost (UPS and USPS final delivery) but tracking doesn't show a signature requirement.

Just got this email

Dear Valued Atlantic Cigar Customers,
Effective March 1st, 2020 UPS will implement a new shipping policy. UPS is now requiring adult (21+) signature confirmations on all shipments. Atlantic Cigar will transition to this new policy starting March 1st, 2020. You will see a slight raise in shipping costs due to the signature confirmation required by UPS. To ease the raise in shipping costs, we will also be implementing SurePost as an alternative shipping method. You can view our new shipping rates taking effect March 1st at https://atlanticcigar.com/shipping-returns/
Best Regards,
The Atlantic Cigar Team

UPS is switching to this because CA passed a law that any tobacco shipment has to have a signature. Instead of just doing it in CA they decided to do it everywhere. UPS also will not do COD on tobacco products anymore which a lot of B&M's used.

I had the same problem. I just have it held at the UPS distribution center and pick it up since it is not far from my home.

Yeah, just a pain. Plus I chose the free shipping promo, which mean it took literally 7 days to just get to Los Angeles! So now I need to wait until Saturday to trek out to the UPS Hub Facility, meaning another 5 days.

Good thing most cigar warehouses over-humidify
