  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Wrapper: Nicaraguan

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Price: $9.36

Vitola: 4 1/4 x 54

Drink: Coca-Cola

Appearance & Construction: The wrapper is oily, dark, rich, and smooth to the touch. Absolutely no veins, splotches, patches, or sun spots. This is a beautiful looking cigar. The draw is a little tight for my liking, and you have to work a little bit to get a satisfactory amount of smoke. The burn so far is very even, and slow. However, the temperature of the cigar is a little higher than I’d prefer, but maybe I’m smoking too fast, trying to get that “right” amount of smoke. The ash is solid for the most part (will stay on until you reach the band), but not that pure white ash that I love so much. It’s a grey to dark grey color, and has rings of cracks throughout.

Pre-Light: Draw is great, awesome aroma coming off this stick. The draw on the pre-light is unlike anything I’ve ever tasted in a cigar. Believe it or not, it tastes like pine cones. Don’t ask how I know how those taste, but honestly, the flavor is incredible. It’s almost unfortunate that I have to light this stogie up, because I’m enjoying it so much as it is.

Flavor & Notes: Complexity is immediately apparent. Tons of cedar, pine, leather, and spices

First Third – This is going to be a difficult review as I’m tasting things in this cigar that I’ve never tasted before. Just like in the pre-light, there is a robust pine taste along with cedar, leather, pete, and two or three other things that will have you scratching your head. Through the nose you will taste a heavy peppery, pine, taste, but not overwhelming to your palette.

Second Third – Still very spicy at this point. The pine taste is still apparent, but is now masked by many other things. A peppery taste, similar to a jalapeño has also been added to the mix. At this point I’m enjoying the overall flavor a lot more than the first third. The retrohale is still quite spicy, but has smoothed out to the point where it will be enjoyable for most people.

Final Third – The fullness of the flavor has picked up significantly. The spiciness has come back with a vengeance, and it seems to be dominating all of the other flavors. It has turned almost mono-tone with pepper and pine flavor. Still interesting and different, but it’s apparent that it’s starting to sizzle out.

Body: Starts off full bodied. Through the nose the body is felt quite a bit more, but it’s not incredibly harsh. Very spicy, but not in a way that’s going to make your eyes water. In the final third, the body kicks up about 3 notches. I don’t think it’s going to be too much for anyone to handle, but it packs a punch.

Overall Smoking Experience: With all the hype going around with this cigar I really thought it was going to be a big gimmick. The band screams gimmick. The ads scream gimmick. Fortunately, the cigar isn’t a gimmick. It’s a solid smoke, that most full-bodied smokers will enjoy. It offers unique flavors that won’t be found in many other cigars. Definitely worth a try while they are still available.

Rating: 8.0

Buy Again: I would but they won’t be available.

Chooch Rating: 3/5 due to people bargin over micro-batching and what I consider to be a gimmicky ad campaign.

Viaje doesn't produce "gimmick" cigars.........not sure why you would go into smoking the MOAB thinking this! Great review nonetheless, I just ordered a fiver for aging!

Hey, I like them a lot... but come on, that's got to be sarcasm to not think their has be anything non gimmicky about this whole thing...

OH MY GOD! SAN ANTONIO HAS JUST BEEN DESTROYED BY WMD'S AND MOAB'S!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But still I love this stuff and eat it up just as much as the next guy. And I'm fortunate enough to own a cigar shop and be the lucky one to get all the "LE" Viaje and Tatuaje stuff in San Antonio. But let's be honest about it too...

Oh and aging will be awesome for this cigar IMO.

Thanks for the review!

I just picked up 3 WMD & 2 MOABs! I'm going to let them sit at least for a week or two. They still have the just rolled look & feel to them. Maybe the shipping?

Here's a pic from the local B&M. Those from the DFW HERFs should recognize the shop!

Yeah give them a chance to sit a while. Cigars that are shipped from Viaje usually are on a shipping truck for 4 days before they get to my shop. And I'm in SATX. 4 Days is really quick only other cigar that comes in that fast is Tatuaje. Every where else sits on a truck for over a week

Nice review... I'm burning through one of these now and agree with pretty much most of what you noted.

Definite notes of pine, also toasted rye or sometype of dark/grain bread. Spice overload... I'd want to burn through probably two or three more to really pinpoint down the various spice notes. Leather as well, and dark maduro flavors (bold espresso, etc.) with plenty of pepper mixed in. Really quite a bit going on.

Flavors are full bodied, but not quite meshed together yet. Despite a cautious cut, the draw was a bit loose. Tons of smoke but not as much as I've gotten out of a Monte PE.

The burn on the one I've had was a bit wonky and had to be touched up... I can't stand it when short cigars have to be touched up, even though the rg on this is obviously larger than something like a PL.

Really a great cigar... similar to the 2nd Release S&B (?) in that I think these need a few months, maybe as much as six, of resting time before they hit full stride flavor-wise.

Some definite strength, but not knock-you-on-your-@$$ strength.

I've had a few generous BOTLs reach out to me re: WMDs... while one of these alone isn't bad... I'm REALLY TEMPTED to do a head-to-head-to-head-to-head one man herf working through the DC, ?, MOAB, and WMD. Probably not a good idea as I'll probably overload my palate and make myself a bit dizzy, but it just sounds fun, doesn't it?

haha Yeah, prob too much to do at once. But nice to know you have all of those to even think about doing something like that. And great quick review there. I DEFINITELY see the dark bread thing you said. Now I can for sure pick out that rye taste from this cigar. Nice call!

I smoked one of each last Thursday and got to say 2 was a bit much.
Great sticks. Both had wonky burns. Seems to be inherent with S&B's.
I don't think I could handle all 4 at once honestly but the thought crossed my mind.
Unfortunately I only have one dc left.

Smoked the MoaB on Sunday and it was very good, one of the better smokes I had this year! The first 1/2 inch was peppery (white & black) after which it melted together with dark coffee - espresso flavors. The middle was strong in both intensity and flavor and the back half stayed the same. If it was 1/2 inch longer, it would be a knockout! I enjoy the full body/full flavor sticks and about 1 more inch would be to the point that I would have over kill. I even stuck the nub down my meerschaum to no avail....talk about "blue balls"!!!! Overall it exceeded expectations!!

Hawaiian - smoke one now, wait 1month then smoke another, wait 2months smoke another -proceed to kick yourself for not buying more!
