I'm a planning my next split and am considering some '99 Unicos. How do these compare to the Famoso?

It seems that every Famoso I have smoked has come across as not very refined and a little too "in your face".

I really like the Classico though. Any advice?

The Unicos are fabulous. A quite distinct flavor, If there ever was one. I can't help you on the Famosos. I've never enjoyed one.

I have some '02 Unicos coming and haven't sampled any '97 Famosos. What a real treat would be is '97 Unicos, if you can find them. Damn MRN! :crosseyed :smokingbo

Todd, the Unicos are delicious. Definitely NOT an in-your-face smoke. Lovely smoke with honey, hazelnut, coffee, beans and nicely-balanced cedar undertones.

I have not had the experience with the Famosos that you have, but I can assure you
that even the fresh 03/04 Unicos are not in the harsh realm you describe.

I like them very much and when compared with other Piramides, they offer up
a much needed contrast to that of, say, the Monte2 / BBF / La Punta / Sancho Panza.

Can't go wrong with these, IMHO.

I have some VR unicos from 01. They have great flavor but underfilled. The current production famosos I have had haven't done much for me but, the 97's are great.
