  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

We're Undefeated

As a few of you already know, I'm in my third year coaching JV lacrosse for my district of employment. What you may not know is that my first two years were pretty miserable. I only had 13 kids on the roster each year (leaves me three subs TOTAL) for games if everyone shows up. They were the most part screw-ups, unmotivated, and bottom line didn't know how to win, or how much hard work went into winning. In my first two years of coaching we had 4 total wins. I was miserable, and the most frustrating part was I felt like I was the only member of the team who was affected by our relentless losing.

One game from last year was particularly memorable. We played a team from horseheads, and they were absolutely appaling. The were saying horrendous things to my players and to me. needless to say, my small undisciplined team was retalliating and taking stupid penalties. needless to say, we lost the game 12-2. The kicker was their coach informed me after the game that he would be contacting my athletic director to inform him about how 'appaling our players were and how he feels I have no control over my boys and am not fit to be a coach'. as he's 'informing' me of this, his team walks over midfield and tries to pick a fight with my team, as his back is turned to them.

so tonight, we have our season/home opener against...you guessed it...horseheads. they came with the same team, but a new coach. we came with the same coach, but a completely different team. we are now 25 deep with a core of players who are motivated, play with emotion, want to win, but most importantly, willing to work to get that win. they rooled in expecting to slaughter us again like they did last year. they did not anticipate a team who was ready and waiting for them. we took it to them from the opening face-off and did not let up until the last whistle. we beat them 5-1.

The played the same cheap, unsportsmanlike, try-to-get-under-your-skin ball. we played our own gonna-take-it-to-you on the score board kind of ball. instead of draggin ourselves down to their level, we made them come up and play to ours. quite frankly...they didn;t know how to handle it. They talked, we scored and walked away. they cross-checked us across the back, we got up, went man-up and scored again. we only took two penalties (both questionable calls) the entire game. It was the first time a JC lacrosse team, from any level, has defeated horseheads in over a decade. needless to say, I am extremely proud of my team tonight and just wanted to share with all of you.

oh, and being the good sports that they are, three players from the other team refused to shake my hand today after the game. Class acts all the way!

La Cross is a awesome game. Skill, dexerity, speed and practice. Plus you give kids big sticks with nets and allow them to whack each other senseless. (Not really, just enough whacking to dislodge the ball)
