  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

What about a newbie pipe tobbacco trade thread?

What do you guys think if we tried to get a noob pipe tobacco trade up? on the experienced side you could send samples and maybe a corncob or cheap briar, then on the noob side they could trade sticks or cash? and maybe beyond this a blind pipe trade with experienced people?
Im up for both right now if someone new see this and wants to go for it, or anyone that wants to try something new hit me up.

I think it is an awesome idea.

I open the pipe threads to read them because I just like reading about things I don't know much about. I opened the pipe forums once, but I shut the light off. Closed the door and backed slowly away.

Keep the enthusiasm going man.

i think there is a possibility here, but it might be too early yet.

my concern is that, with the newb sampler, it is set up such that the sponsors are there as tenured members who know the field and are willing to assume the risk of making sure the trade is always at least more than fair in the newb's favor. i know, picking up a guy, there is the off chance he will just floor me with his offering in the trade, and have to dig real deep, or pick up extras, to make sure it rolls fair. that is why it is set up as it is, with the sponsorship requirements. i know if a newb is trying to grift (unlikely but possible), and i also know what it takes to make it equitable, with the oversight of all the other sponsors, and anyone who reads the thread, to keep MY side honest.

and, please, DON'T misunderstand me, it is not that i think any of y'all would short a trade, or be less than overboard on hooking a novitiate up, truth be told. but, with pipe, and insane pile of tobaccos can be had for like nothing, and the value of the trade with a pipe could be more subjective: opus has a set tag, padron has a set tag, but would the value of a bargain briar, or a decent estate briar, be as plain to all sides?

personally i would support anyone trying to do this in private trade. not a problem. as for a formal thread, i don't think our pipe community is deep enough, yet, to support it. growing, yes. enthusiastic, hell yes! but we don't have the raw numbers or the tenured board time to make it official. yet. o)

This was my concern too. Unfortunately you need equipment for pipe smoking so it is hard for a trade to be fair. I think maybe in the future we could do it, like have a set limit to get a pre established sized sampler then if the elder brother wants to make it bigger he could do that. Either way I think your right that we should table it for now and wait until we have the backing. Grrrrr has some things working that when it happens it will be fun.

If this can get off without a hitch I'd be in for sure. I haven't even done a newbie trade in cigars for awhile but that's because my budget has been in the shitter with my wife's job situation. Just another thing I don't need to stress out about at this time. hopefully within the next couple months I'll be back in the swing of things and jump back on board. The reason I got back into pipes is because it's way cheaper than cigars which works for me at this time. Plus it's been extremely fun!

I think everyone will end up liking Grrrrs plan and it will serve better than the execution this type of trade would take. The only thing that i might try to push forward would be some type of blind trade that would require a minimum amount to trade between brothers, this wouldn't work so well for pipe noobs but if you had a couple of tins and wanted to try some variety it might work. I will defiantly be seeking input from senior members before anything gets off the ground with that though and it might and probably should be ran by someone with more tenure on the site. This whole thread was just kinda throwing around ideas in the meantime anytime someone even hints at wanting to try pipes im going to beat them down.lol

I would say keep it simple maybe even the same across the board, like a corn cob and five samples for each noob. That way it doesn't get out of hand. I am sure there is no way to stop that from happening but it's a good thought. Lol
