  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

What about CigarRating System?

Brothers, the culture of smoking of cigars in the USA is developed where more strongly and better, than in Russia. What in your opinion system rating the smoked cigar the best and effective?

Not sure what the question is but here's my take on ratings. All ratings are subjective, the trick is to find someone that has a similar palate to your own. I'm still looking, but than again I put jalapeňos in my PB&J sandwiches.

I believe if you are going to use a rating system, devise your own. A personal rating system should concern what characteristics of a cigar matter the most to you. And a given rating should be valid for only the one who rated it.

Here's a basis of what kind of personal rating I generally use. As an overall experience after smoking a cigar, would I smoke it again:

5) Definitely
4) Likely
3) Maybe
2) Probably not
1) Never

Then answer why? or why not? to the above.

As for existing rating systems, again it depends. If you think appearance of a cigar matters, then try CA. If you want a system that considers the price of the cigar, CM would be your bet.

I my self have been trying to find a good rating system and the best one i can find is Cigar Magazine, because they look for things that do in a good cigar.
1 what is the presentation
2 How firm or soft is the Cigar
3 Is the wrapper oily or not
4 Does it burn even or not
5 Are the first taste's inviting or a turn off?
6 Does it hold a good flavor till the end

These are the things i look for while smoking.

Wouldn't you like to know?
I don't like rating systems due to Davidoff cigars. I have never been able to finish a davidoff or AVO cigar as the flavour profile is way out of my range. They are very well made cigars but not my thing. I know many other well respected smokers who enjoy them. So my problem with rating systems is when I rate them poorly and the next guy rates them well we are all right back at the begining of not having a clue if this is a good cigar. There is just too much personal taste and preferance involved.

I find that rating systems you have to use as a gauge and let it point you in one way or another but after that its all up to personal taste. And then we all have had that smoke where smoke it one time like or dislike it and try it later and come up with something different.

And what about the professional rating systems which use cigars experts?
A professional "cigar expert" is still just a human being expressing their individual opinion. Sure, they may have a well developed pallet but in the end, they're still just postulating an opinion.

And one more thing about professionals: they can be swayed by money, especially advertising dollars.
