I've said this before - but this is just a reminder. I'll be breaking BOTL over time in order to get it into a far better place. Just be patient if you can't reach us! We'll be back
The major player in Cuban rum is Havana Club. If you can find it, try the 15 year of the Cuban Barrel Proof. The 7 year version you can find everywhere.
There's a new Havana Club rum called Maximo that will set you back about $2000 per bottle.
Do any of you guys who were at the NHC herf with Pete this spring remember what rum Dan brought out for us? I think it might have been a Zacapa, but I'm not sure. Whatever it was, it was the best rum I've ever had x20.
If you like a sweeter style of rum, Legendario Elixir is awesome. Think of rum mixed with honey. Pour out a couple shots over a single ice cube & you be in heaven. If you like a drier rum, Zacapa XO is better than 99% of the Cuban stuff- the ther 1% being the rediculously expensive stuff I haven't tried.
Sipping or mixing??? I take it sipping to enjoy with a fine smoke. All mentioned are great rums, and like icehog3 said, there are much better rums than those from the forbidden island. But, one thing I have found that is always a great pairing, sip a rum from the same island that the cigar tobacco is from. It also depends on your tastes. I personally do not enjoy the sweet rums like Zacapa, Pyrat, Zaya, etc. A go to rum for me that is fairly easy to get your hands on is Mount Gay XO. By the way, that HC 15 is MMMMmmmmm, MMMMMMMmmmmm, good.
