  • I've said this before - but this is just a reminder. I'll be breaking BOTL over time in order to get it into a far better place. Just be patient if you can't reach us! We'll be back

What do you do when the box gets low?

I imagine the answer has everything to do with how much a a premium you place on your storage (i.e. if you live somewhere where temperature is never an issue and you can coolidor/tupperdore everything, then why ever bother downsizing). But this is something @CigarJedi and I were discussing over the weekend...

When you have a full box you've been smoking (ahem, bombing) from, and then you have half a box... and then one row of sticks... and then four left... at what point do you cut your losses, toss the box (or whatever you tend to do with them) and move the sticks into a baggie or drawer, making more room in the humi?

I myself, living in SoCal, am at this point (or almost) with a box of Epi 2. There are some left, really not enough to justify keeping the whole box in the 28-ct wineador. I have no other reliable storage (hot summers, yo), so until I get rid of some mostly-empty boxes, there's not much room for more. A pity, since I'd like to start aging some CCs. What's a BOTL to do.

What do YOU do?

Move the partial (once it's below 50%) to a drawer or combine into a designated box. Must make room for more when you can.

When I need box space and have sub-half boxes, they get moved to singles storage. If I don't have enough room in my singles case, I move some to the desktop to make room. If that still doesn't work, I grab an empty ammo can, toss in a plank of Spanish cedar and a Boveda and toss em in there.

I do like most everyone else and move them to another mixed box. I don't really mess with my cigars very often but every 4-6 months or so I go through everything and organize, inspect, condense and take a mental inventory. Takes a little over an hour.

I have a cab I keep several partial boxes in, divided with half a cedar sleeve. Once the box has ten or less, it goes.

I use a variety of strategies when I get to the point that I need to make some space:
  • If I have 1/2 a box (or less) of the same cigar but in different vitolas I will consolidate the 2 boxes into the box that is currently holding the larger vitola.
  • I have individual trays (and some leftover boxes) in my cooler for singles that are organized by brand. Once the box (of those brands) gets to the point where I can move the remainder into one of the trays, I move them as space allows.
  • For CCs, I generally wait until there are 4-5 sticks left and then label them with the box code and date and place them into a humidor that I keep my individual CCs in.

When I get down to a hand full I usually combine with another box. But I like to keep track of box dates and codes so I have to keep a running total on a piece of paper. Sometimes it gets confusing if I don't stay on top of it. If I let is slide and don't document properly for several months I can lose track.
