  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

What do you do with all the fake Cuban cigars you get?

Ever since I’ve become known as the “Cigar Guy” around work and to my circle of friends and family, it seems people keep handing me “Cuban” cigars that aren’t. I appreciate the gestures of course, but I’m not sure what to do with them and wrestle with telling the people who gave them to me that they are counterfeit or risking them bringing me more. I’ve got some fake PSD4’s that came from a box with the “Comintur” stamp on the bottom that are not bad. They are no PSD4, but the have a triple cap, good fill, fair flavor, not bad construction = Good Dog Rocket. I’ve handed some of these out at parties to those self proclaimed coinsures who can’t name the brand and size they like most, but only smoke “Real Cubans”. Not to actual friends, I give them my finest along with what knowledge I can share. Most of what I’ve gotten are full of twigs, have bad construction and you just know they will smoke like wet rope = :barf:. I wouldn’t give the out to people I didn’t like.

So what do you do with your counterfeits? :dunno:

I am interested in this as well. I was gifted a 5'er by some guy on another board who told me they were fakes. He said to smoke them b/c they aren't that bad. I guess I will fire them up.

I just smoke em as yard gars. I have a few, that smoked well, and some that were made so poorly that they wouldn't burn. the fake Pardons 64 I bought on Craigs list were the worst.

Burn them. If they suck then throw them in the street and try a different stick.

Thats what I do.

And I always let people know who give me fakes, sometimes you can tell they feel a little stupid, but I don't want them to be taken advantage of again.

Wouldn't you like to know?
I have a friend who always has a box of fake cohibas in his cabinet. He says everytime he gave a cigar to a sorta smoker they would smoke a half inch and turf it. Now he let's them pick and the fakes always go first.

One time someone gave me nearly 2 boxes and told me they were fakes, but he figured I may like them. And I did. Turned out I liked them enough that I'd go out and buy the same ones if they were available. Never know til you try it.

Mitch, I would share the knowledge that they are fakes doing so in a way not to make the people that gifted them to you feel bad (which I know you wouldn't do) but just to let them know what they are getting. I would tell them you’re very grateful that they thought of you but you are afraid they are spending good money on counterfeits. Also this would cut into the sales of the counterfeits if they stop buying them. Honesty is always the best policy. As long as you make them understand that you just think they have a right to know what they are getting and that it doesn’t change your appreciation in any way. Just my .02

Honesty is my route just about all the time, only exception I can think of was a guy who'd argue with me, just because he's that way.

Yea, kind of a jerk, one of those done everything, knows it all and the details of each story changes with each telling. Not worth having him follow me around all night trying to prove to me he's top dog, I'd rather just let him think he's top dog and leave him to licking his own balls for entertainment.

In that case, you’re right, best left unsaid.

I guess I am fortunate enough that no one really buys me cigars as a favor or gift. I think they know I'm particular and most have asked if I like Cubans. I tell them "yeah I think the real ones are great but unless you know you're buying from the correct store you're most likely paying for counterfeits". So to me it seems a little preemptive education to friends and relatives has kept it to a minimum.
