  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

What makes cigars sour?

I had a punch maduro a week or two ago and really liked it. Smooth and had that sweet maduro taste to it. I went back to my local walk in to get another along with some other sticks last week. I smoked it today and it was sour. I had to put it out halfway through because it wouldn't go away. I tried to purge it three or four times but to no avail. I'm kinda new to cigar smoking and would just like to know why this happens. Pretty sure it was from the same box as the other one as my shop doesn't turn over product too quickly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Jonah

Could be a few different things. Did you pair it with a different drink? Did you smoke it at the same pace? Hell, even the environment that you smoked them in could have an effect (outside as opposed to indoors). Try another, the second cigar may simply have been a dud or the first may have been a pleasant aberration.

Same conditions. Outside, no drink, Try to stay to the 45 second to 1 minute between puffs rule. I'm hoping that was just a dud. We'll see. Thanks for your response.

The other thing that may have happened, typical to the summer months, is if your B&M had a problem with the humidification unit in their humidor and the cigars went thru a period of over humidification, I've found that to cause that "sour" taste some times....just my opinion.

Did ye see any tar on the cap? Maybe ye were purging it wrong. I'd suggest ye try a 3rd too, ye might've gotten unlucky.

Over humidification is my guess...

Was the first stick from the same store (or any store)?

I have learned to stabilize my sticks for about a week after picking them up from a B&M...makes a HUGE difference...

Then again, it could have just been a bad cigar...it happens...

Another thing to consider is what you had to eat prior to smoking. For example, I find that smoking after a dessert (excluding ones made with dark chocolate) tends to make a cigar taste either more bitter or more sour.

If you didn't have anything to eat prior, it might just be a bad stick.

Whats sour taste like in a cigar? Does that mean like that taste you get near the end when it starts to turn a bit. If its that I think it happens when its burning too hot and too fast.

Otherwise that sounds odd.
